The stock shifter is basically a piece of sheetmetal. With a plastic pivot ball encased in a plastic housing and a spring-loaded reverse mechanism built into the handle, it does a great job of divorcing the knob from any drivetrain vibrations. On the opposite end of the spectrum, the Barton shifter is a fully CNC-machined, dual-pivot-trunnion design, hewn from 6061 T6 aluminum and 304 stainless steel. It delivers a 40-percent reduction in handle travel, as well as crisp shifts, which sharply contrast with the spongy stock feel.
