Because the piston oil squirters decrease the oil reserve in the oil pan, the 5.8 requires two more quarts of oil capacity. The resulting 8.5-quart 5.8 oil pan is cast aluminum because a sheetmetal stamping can not achieve the complex shape required. In fact, the casting supplier had to work hard to achieve consistent filling of the intricate mold even when using horizontal instead of vertical mold separations. The new pan is no deeper than the 5.4 pan in order to maintain ground clearance, hence the need to fill every nook and cranny in a horizontal direction. View Related Article
