Trick Flow Twisted Wedge Engine
Our test candidate is a predominately stock 4.6. While the engine had the prerequisite factory PI heads, camshafts, and exhaust, we were happy to see that it wasn't already equipped with the bolt-on accessories that we're installing in the first segment of our test.
Horse Sense:
Since we're covering a boatload of territory with this report, some of the general "how-to" information that is associated was purposely been omitted. This was done to ensure that we'll have page space for more focus on the long-awaited heads and camshafts, as well as all of the dyno-test results (especially with the Twisted Wedge heads installed and a custom tune loaded into our test mule's PCM) from our extensive project.

Trick Flow Twisted Wedge Trick Flow Aluminum Heads
We topped this bullet with Trick Flow's all-new Twisted Wedge aluminum heads for 4.6-, and 5.4-liter Two-Valve modular Fords and stuck it back under the hood of Mike Glasser's Y2K GT. In addition to basic bolt-ons, our HCE (a long-tube-header exhaust system was substituted for an aftermarket intake manifold for this effort) left little doubt about the power-making potential of the new castings, in straight-from-the-box trim.
Thanks in part to the huge success of Ford's S197 ('05-'09) platform and also the brand-new '10 Mustangs, the 4.6-liter New Edge GTs are gaining popularity nowadays because they're being sold for minimal dollars by enthusiasts who are stepping up to the newer models. Because of this new abundance of mostly virgin 'Stangs and an aftermarket that has noticed the resurgence of '99-'04s, just that quickly we're sitting on another Mustang style that may become as revered as its predecessor.

Trick Flow Twisted Wedge Cold Air Induction System
The lineup of bolt-ons for Mustang performance never changes. Trick Flow's cold-air-induction system (PN TFS-23066; $189.95), 75mm throttle body (PN TFS-24075; $165.95) and upper intake plenum (PN TFS-51800001; $109.95) make up the entry-level upgrade package for Mike's 'Stang, along with a set of underdrive pulleys that we'll discuss elsewhere in this report.
In addition to testing those bolt-on upgrades, one of the projects that we've wanted to do for a long time is hop-up a New Edge 'Stang's stock Two-Valve bullet with a performance-minded "top half," consisting of improved cylinder heads, bigger camshafts, and an intake manifold. The only problem we had in doing this was the lack of non-stock pieces-mainly cylinder heads-for the 4.6 Two-Valve. While cams and even new, aluminum intake manifolds for '99-'04 GTs had come to fruition, ported versions of Ford's Performance Improved cylinder heads had been the mainstay for upgrading the top-half of a modular engine.

Trick Flow Twisted Wedge Filtercharger System
Trick Flow's CAI setup actually is K&N's tried-and-true Filtercharger system for '99-'04 Two-Valve 'Stangs. Ricardo Topete of GTR High Performance transfers the factory and new induction pieces in about 30 minutes.
Engineers at Trick Flow are serious about making big steam with small-block Ford engines (pushrod or modular), and over the years the company's Twisted Wedge cylinder-head series has become a thing of legend in the 5.0 Mustang community. Introduced in 1996, TFS's aluminum Twisted Wedge castings brought a dramatic change in the conventional design of small-block Ford cylinder heads.

Trick Flow Twisted Wedge Fuel Injector
Ricardo gives the stock mass air a simple cleaning, as it is being reused for our project. However, since a fuel-injector upgrade is required as part of the heads/cams swap for these engines, adding Aabaco's DBX unit is something you might consider including when you bolt new heads and cams on your 'Stang.

Trick Flow Twisted Wedge Upper Intake Plenum
After dynoing the test mule with its new CAI, our next step is swapping the factory upper-intake plenum and 65mm throttle body with the new pieces from Trick Flow.

Trick Flow Twisted Wedge Airflow
Smoothing out airflow into any engine is one of the keys to improving horsepower and torque. Notice the dramatic differences in the curvature and inlet size of the Trick Flow upper-intake plenum and the boxy, OEM piece.

Trick Flow Twisted Wedge Intake Manifold
Ricardo bolts the Trick Flow-updated throttle body/plenum assembly to the Mustang's stock intake manifold. Keep in mind the conversion requires disconnecting the throttle linkage and transferring a few support pieces from the original hardware, such as TPS and IAC, so allow a bit more time for getting it done. Enhancing air volume in this manner also will undoubtedly skew the air/fuel mixture, which is something that we'll be mindful of as we put the car through its dyno sessions.

Trick Flow Twisted Wedge Air Intake Tube
Notice the large bend and the ridges (which contribute to the tube's inefficiency) in the factory air-intake tube. The new inlet is much smoother and only makes one turn-directly into the throttle body.
