If you don't have a hoist and a trans jack, and you don't want to rent a bay, you can do this with four jackstands and a floor jack. When your swap with is finished, you'll have some great wrenching war stories to tell your buddies. You're going to need some tall stands to get the transmission out, but it can be done. We can't recommend a lift highly enough. Likewise if you have positive-displacement blower on your 'Stang, like Livernois does, you need to take it off for firewall clearance. If your 'Stang has a centrifugal supercharger, you'll need to disconnect the inlet tube and the discharge tube that goes to the intercooler so you can tilt the motor. With a turbocharger you will need to remove any tubing that restricts you from tilting the engine for clearance. If you have a naturally aspirated engine you're all set. Of course, if this seems like to much for you to tackle, any local trans shop can do this swap without drama. It should bolt right up.

Getting started, you must remove the converter nuts through the access hole in the back of the driver side of the block. Livernois' 'Stang has long-tube headers, limiting access. Short-tube headers or stock manifolds make access easier. If you have the stock manifolds, get them off of there and go buy some headers, dude.

Really dig in by pulling the starter, wiring harness, and the stock X-shape crossover pipe. When you disconnect the trans cooler lines, you'll need to remove the bottom one first and take that fitting out of the trans to get full access to the top fitting nut with two wrenches.

It's time to remove the bolts on your driveshaft loop-you do have one, right-and slide it back. Disconnect the driveshaft from the transmission. Remove the trans mount and bellhousing bolts and slide the trans rearward until the converter snout disengages from the crankshaft. Carefully lower the transmission and find a good place to store it. Better yet, move it online to recoup some money for future speed parts.

As long as you have easy access, it would be wise to install an SFI-approved flexplate, like this one from TCI. It's something you should have on a power-adder car anyway.

Once you've got the tranny carefully positioned on your trans jack, you can stand back and look at the cool anodized CNC servos. Besides taking all the power you can throw at it, the TCI trans looks great. It has better paint than your author's car!

The trans comes from TCI packed with foam all around it. Get one of your sturdy friends to help you lift it and get it up on the trans jack.

It's always wise to remove the paint from the torque converter pilot that mates with the crank. The paint would come off there when you run it, taking it off before keeps contamination to a minimum.
