Though it looks much like any other T-56, one of the Magnum's many strength improvements comes from added beef in the front and rear bulkheads of the main case. Note the TKO-style tailhousing with the reversible shifter plate (though any Fox and Fox-4 applications are likely to use the rearmost position shown). A mechanical speedo pickup is provided on the left of the tailhousing, and an electric pickup on the right.

Though it has no late-model Mustang relevance, provision for a third shifter location is provided forward of the tailhousing, which may be suitable for some vintage 'Stangs or other early-Ford applications. The point is that the Magnum is made to be as application-flexible as possible.

In comparison to the Magnum (top), a typical OEM T-56 (GM in this case) has but a single shifter position. The removable cover forward of the tailhousing on the OEM version is merely an inspection plate with a bare shift rail (no shifter cup) passing beneath. While still on the topic of shifter positioning, Tremec will soon offer a Magnum configured for S197 applications.

Let's talk about strength. The drive gears on the Magnum countershaft (left) have a much wider face width than the regular T-56s, for greatly increased torque capacity. The one-piece Magnum shaft is also much more resistant to bending or distortion than the two-piece T-56's and has notably larger bearings for improved support.
