Sleek as they come, John Mihovetz's Mercury Cougar bodywork was originally designed to fit in with the sport-compact crowd in NHRA racing. It's since proved aerodynamic sleek, a real advantage when running a half-size engine in a 200-plus-mph class. Here John heats the hides at Fontana last summer on his way to the '08 PSCA Pro Street championship.

Air plumbing and two of Garrett's largest medium-frame turbos dominate the underhood scene. The underhood presentation is workman-like race car; John Mihovetz is working too hard for ultimate power and reliability to bother with bling.

Accufab race engines begin with used stock Mustang Cobra aluminum 4.6 blocks (John buys as many Cobra engines as he can find). As extensive machining and hand detailing are required, almost any old block will do as long as it has workable stock cylinders. Note the water passages in the deck have been plugged on this work in progress; more on that later.

Mercury Cougar Cobra Hybrid Rounded Edges
Fred Grochulski "jewels" the blocks: hours of hand detailing with a die grinder and sanding rolls. Fingers run along either the inside or outside of the block encounter only rounded edges. This relieves stress risers, aids oil drain-back, and suppresses windage, which Fred chases with a vengeance, even in this dry-sumped engine.
