S197 Mustang Supercharger - Shocked And Awed
Gather a couple of friends... Gather a couple of friends to assist in setting the supercharger into place. Saleen's instructions articulate this nose-down trajectory in order to slip the supercharger under the head flanges. Once everything is aligned, bolt down the assembly to the tune of 91 in-lb. | The 475 and 550 kits have... The 475 and 550 kits have a new airbox lid and plumbing assembly, while the bottom of the original box is reused and cut out to increase airflow, as seen here. Before buttoning up the revised intake tract, closely inspect the new air filter for bits of silicone debris from the manufacturing process. Also blow out the filter box and new throttle-body ducting with compressed air. Tight supercharger rotor tolerances make it quite sensitive to debris. | The stock mass air sensor... The stock mass air sensor is removed from the stock airbox lid and installed in the new Saleen housing. | In a neat piece of engineering,... In a neat piece of engineering, Saleen has turned the original alternator around, in effect rotating it backward compared to the original setup. To make it all function seamlessly, several modifications are required, including lengthening the wiring harness, changing the pulley, and installing a new bracket. | A fuel system upgrade is included... A fuel system upgrade is included only in SpeedLab's 550 kit and is comprised of a dual fuel pump, a second fuel-pump module, and a new wiring harness that starts in the trunk and runs to the engine compartment. Typical of all the high-quality wiring in the Saleen kit, the harness is OEM-style with correct plugs and connections. | A Saleen gauge pod isn't part... A Saleen gauge pod isn't part of the blower kits; rather, it's a $299.95 option. In a way, this would immediately suggest to Bryan that something had been done in his absence, but we couldn't resist. | Several Saleen wiring harnesses... Several Saleen wiring harnesses (gauges, heat-exchanger water pump, fuel pump) penetrate from exterior to interior through this plug in the passenger-side fenderwell. They're secured to the Ford harness that runs along the same path using zip ties. | The 550s are the lone Speedlab... The 550s are the lone Speedlab kits to feature a JDM Engineering tune with SCT's Xcalibrator 2 handheld programmer. Once the program is loaded up, the coolant refilled, and all the frontend components reinstalled, we're ready to fire up and check for leaks. | It's done and ready to rock!... It's done and ready to rock! As you'll see in our dyno chart, the 550 kit made great power, but we were also impressed with the fit and finish of the comprehensive kit. As if that weren't enough, we find the appearance of the assembly fantastic! |
