Fox Mustang Chicane Carpet Kit - Neat At Your Feet
Ensuring the finished carpet job doesn't bund and gather while in use, the whole job is glued down. Chicane used this 3M spray-on_glue, which stuck tenaciously. At about $15 a can it isn't cheap, but it works great.
The glue is sprayed on to form an even coat on the chassis and the undrlayment, then the fabric is laid down. Make sure you have the material where you want it when it goes down, because that's where it's going to stick.
With the two large pieces of underlayment glued down, this is how our 5.0 interior looks. Getting this far was easy; the underlayment isn't critical regarding placement as long as it insn't carelessly bunched or wrinkled. Furthermore, with future kits having the underlayment already glued to the carpet, this step won't even be necessary.
Carpet installation begins with the two "over the hump" pieces that live under the front seats. These aren't critical installs, as only a small portion of the outboard edge will eventually be visible. Still, there is a bit of hole location and cutting involved, as holes aren't prelocated in the Chicane kit.
Because the glue is aggressive, it's best to tape off areas where you don't want it to accidentally rub off. For us, it's the door weatherstripping.
Next up are the rocker carpet pieces, one for each side. These are the only pieces to get this treatment and are best glued while outside the car. Once glued, they are laid in position and pressed down.
Again, holes must be located by the installer. This is easy enough with the seatbelt attach points since they protrude slightly. Simply hammering the carpet over the attach point will cut the carpet exactly around the protrusion.
Here, the perfectly located and symmetrical hole is cut, and the waste material is removed.
Next up is the large piece of carpeting in the passenger footwell. It's easy to glue it on both surfaces and lay it down, but it's critical to have the carpet well-placed when going for the glue. Placing the carpet dry, gluing one half and pressing it down, then gluing the other half works best. Smooth all wrinkes immediately.
