1999 Cobra Stock Axle Upgrade - Independently Robust
For this install, Jason bought new axleshafts from Ford so he would have new inner CV joints. At the time, they weren't available from The Driveshaft Shop. Now you can get totally built axleshaft assemblies from the company. Jason added these new inner CV joints to The Driveshaft Shop's axleshafts.
Here's a comparison shot of the stock axle (left) next to the Level 5 axle. Stevie Wonder could see the extra strength offered by The Driveshaft Shop's axles, as well as the reason for the hub upgrade.
Speaking of the upgraded hub, it's a good thing Bartow Ford has a press on the premises. The old hub must be pressed out and the new hub pressed in. No, you won't be able to use a hammer for this operation. As you can see, Jason already set up the hub with ARP wheel studs.
With the hub pressed in the factory knuckle, we begin the reinstallation phase by inserting the Extreme Level 5 axleshaft into the pumpkin. This step is crucial as this spacer goes on the inside of the knuckle when you reinstall the assembly. It fits right into the knuckle, against the new hub.
With everything in place, we can reinstall the knuckle with the new hub. Don't forget to line up the marks with the new hub. Don't forget to line up the marks on the upper cam bolt with the bracket so the alignment specs stay true.
To finish the axleshaft installation, Jason and his buddy Scott Hawkins torque the axle nut to 225 lb-ft. Yes, the number is correct. That's quite a bit of torque, so eat your Wheaties before attempting that feature.
After Jason and Scott torque the axle nut, installation goes in reverse of the removal process. This is the view from below with the upgraded Extreme Level 5 axles.
Just to make sure the Cobra is still within alignment spec, Jason put the car on the alignment rack at Bartow Ford. Of course, since he reinstalled the upper knuckle cam bolts back in the proper orientation, the alignment was still spot-on.
