Fox Mustang Alternator - Leading The Charge
We opted to further upgrade Victor's alternator with PA's Alternator Power Wire Kit (PN 9902; $59). The kit includes a high-quality four-gauge power wire, which Saul attaches to the alternator's battery post along with the black/orange-striped wires.
The 3G is secured with a new bolt for the top mounting position. The bolt is included, so you don't need to worry too much about hanging onto the original. The long bolt at the lower end of the bracket (alternator/smog-pump bolt) is reused.
The OEM voltage-regulator plug is retained since it connects directly into the socket on the 3G without modification.
This mondo 200-amp fuse is the highlight of our fortified power wire. The fuse is extra protection for the factory wiring from damage (burning) due to the new alternator's high current.
The positive and negative battery cables and terminals on Victor's 'Stang were absolutely hammered (they're probably original)...
...so we replaced the entire works with new pieces from All Balls Racing Products, including four-gauge power (PN 77-2403/ red/24-inch; $6.50) and ground (PN 77-6001/ silver/60-inch; $10.50) wires, as well as two trick battery terminals (PN 77-9902; $8.99 each).
The ring connector on the negative battery cable must be opened slightly before securing the cable to the engine block for a solid ground.
After reinstalling the serpentine belt and confirming the 3G is secure in its bracket, we started the engine and once again used a voltmeter to see how well our recharged charging system was working. The alternator upgrade improved voltage by 0.29 volt and boosted amperage (our reading was taken with the battery connected) to a whopping 375 amps, a gain of 25 amps over the stock alternator's output.
Don't Mustangs' 5.0 engines look inviting when they're as stock as this one? Now that this stock bullet has plenty of juice, Victor says he plans to make many performance upgrades in the future. We spied a pretty stout supercharger system stashed in the hatch area, so it's probably just a matter of time and money before the engine you see here has a completely different look and a much higher level of performance.
