Removing the OEM three-piece...
Removing the OEM three-piece headlight/turn-signal/marker light pieces requires a 7/16 wrench and the same-size deep socket, a ratchet, and a long extension to access and loosen the cap nuts (seven per side) that secure each light on its mounting studs. We recommend loosening the radiator hold-downs and pulling the radiator away from the core support just enough to access the fasteners on the driver-side turn signal. A 10mm socket is necessary for loosening the hold-downs.
The '87-'93 'Stang's hazy-headlight-lens condition is something we've discussed in Tech Inspection and Q&A on numerous occasions. Whenever we've given you tips on how to clean up a Mustang's cloudy lenses, the advice usually involves a fair amount of manual labor. Various levels of cleaning, wet-sanding, and polishing have proven to be the most popular and most effective remedies. Restoring the gleam to the headlights can take up a sizeable amount of your valuable time, especially if the lenses are really bad.
We're sure there are some 'Stang purists reading this who wouldn't think twice about giving up a few hours of their Saturday simply for the greater good of having OEM headlights bling again. But we also know some 'Stangbangers live for the upgrade, especially when it involves their Pony's look and style. When an appearance change can be made in roughly 30 minutes, that's just icing on the cake.
These new one-piece headlights (PN 49011/Black or 49012/Chrome; $239.99) from Mustang Tuning are simple, stylish cures for the lack of clarity that can plague a Fox-body Mustang's headlight system. Mustang Tuning's new lights, which closely resemble the beacons that adorn the fronts of New Edge ('99-'04) 'Stangs, are direct replacements for the factory three-piece headlights of '87-'93 models.
SoCal 'Stangbanger Dustin Drews owns a carbureted '92 LX that drew our attention at a recent San Fernando Valley cruise night. While the blue hatchback was super clean, we noticed its factory headlights were big-time victims of the haze, which makes the car a perfect candidate for this replacement effort. Read on and see how we bring a new look to Dustin's Fox in less than an hour. A ratchet, a 71/416 socket, and a combination wrench of the same size are the only tools you'll need to perform this easy swap.
The Mustang Tuning one-piece... The Mustang Tuning one-piece headlight assembly installs directly into only four of the factory mounting holes, as opposed to the seven that hold down the three pieces of the original setup. | The factory headlight-bulb... The factory headlight-bulb collars must be replaced with locking collars that are included with each Mustang Tuning kit. The new collars secure the bulbs inside their housings. | The original headlamps on... The original headlamps on Dustin's ride were seriously clouded and projected a ton of yellow during nighttime cruises. Headlight haze is headlight haze in our book, regardless of color, and that leaves two options: clean 'em or replace 'em. |
We chose the latter for this... We chose the latter for this exercise, and we had the front of Dustin's '92 looking good in short order. | | |
