1988 Ford Mustang Heads, Cam, And Intake Kit - Zoom at the Top
The total package-the Trick Flow Top-End Engine Kit, Accufab 70mm throttle body, Professional Mass Air Systems Pro-M 80, Ford Racing Performance Parts injectors, and Anderson Ford Motorsport's Power Pipe-didn't disappoint us. After posting an initial 220.99 rear-wheel horsepower and 277.18 lb-ft of torque on B&D's Clayton EC1000 108-12 load-bearing chassis dyno-a unit that uses the vehicle's weight as part of the calculation criteria for horsepower and torque-and prior to the upgrade, rpm/tach signal information during baseline runs was skewed by a mysterious glitch in the car's electronics. We also noticed that the air/fuel mixture reached an alarmingly lean 14.6 during our baseline testing; the pumped-up coupe roared to 292.93 horses and 317.01 lb-ft of torque (a 71.94 hp/39.83 lb-ft gain at the back tires). When we gave it another go with the new parts, air/fuel richened up to a much safer 12.1 ratio.With the T5 transmission, Brian estimates there is an approximately 13 percent loss of power to the rear wheels on the Clayton. Also, in fairness to B&D, the numbers we got (before and after) were produced with the engine burning 89-octane fuel, as opposed to the 93-octane pump gas that is preferred for this type of performance evaluation. We blame that one on Jim, who filled up right before delivering the coupe to the shop. We're confident that higher numbers will be produced when the car is tested with higher-octane fuel, and timing can be advanced beyond just 10 degrees. | Baseline | Trick Flow | | RPM | Power | Torque | RPM | Power | Torque | | | | | | | | 2,006 | 92.81 | 242.9 | 2,000 | 92.6 | 243.3 | | 2,104 | 97.53 | 243.4 | 2,100 | 99 | 247.6 | | 2,209 | 105.3 | 250.5 | 2,200 | 103.4 | 246.9 | | 2,303 | 109.8 | 250.6 | 2,305 | 108.6 | 247.4 | | 2,401 | 116.2 | 254.3 | 2,408 | 113.9 | 248.5 | | 2,500 | 121.4 | 255.1 | 2,503 | 117.9 | 247.5 | | 2,607 | 127.1 | 256 | 2,604 | 122.2 | 246.5 | | 2,807 | 139.3 | 260.6 | 2,704 | 126.8 | 246.3 | | 2,902 | 145.3 | 263 | 2,802 | 133.5 | 250.2 | | 3,006 | 154.4 | 269.8 | 2,902 | 141.6 | 256.4 | | 3,101 | 161.7 | 273.8 | 3,010 | 149.7 | 261.3 | | 3,207 | 167 | 273.6 | 3,100 | 157.4 | 266.6 | | 3,303 | 171.2 | 272.2 | 3,207 | 165.7 | 271.5 | | 3,405 | 176.8 | 272.8 | 3,301 | 173.7 | 276.5 | | 3,505 | 184.1 | 275.9 | 3,409 | 182.3 | 280.9 | | 3,606 | 190.3 | 277.1 | 3,508 | 192.4 | 288 | | 3,708 | 194.4 | 275.4 | 3,608 | 203.1 | 295.6 | | 3,808 | 198.5 | 273.8 | 3,704 | 212.4 | 301.2 | | 3,907 | 203.1 | 273 | 3,809 | 220.9 | 304.6 | | 4,003 | 206.1 | 270.5 | 3,909 | 227.4 | 305.6 | | 4,102 | 210 | 268.9 | 4,005 | 232.6 | 305 | | 4,207 | 212.4 | 265.2 | 4,110 | 240 | 306.8 | | 4,304 | 214.3 | 261.5 | 4,209 | 247.3 | 308.6 | | 4,400 | 215.8 | 257.6 | 4,308 | 255.6 | 311.6 | | 4,505 | 218.3 | 254.5 | 4,406 | 263.9 | 314.6 | | 4,603 | 219 | 249.9 | 4,507 | 271.5 | 316.4 | | 4,701 | 219.6 | 245.4 | 4,610 | 277.2 | 315.8 | | 4,801 | 220.8 | 241.5 | 4,709 | 280.9 | 313.3 | | n/a | n/a | n/a | 4,805 | 283 | 309.3 | | n/a | n/a | n/a | 4,902 | 284.6 | 305 | | n/a | n/a | n/a | 5,000 | 286 | 300.4 | | n/a | n/a | n/a | 5,103 | 286.9 | 295.2 | | n/a | n/a | n/a | 5,205 | 289.4 | 292 | | n/a | n/a | n/a | 5,304 | 291.5 | 288.6 | | n/a | n/a | n/a | 5,400 | 292.5 | 284.5 |
