The heart of the AOD is a compound planetary gearset-"compound" because it has two sets of pinion gears, or planets (one set short, one set long), mounted on a common planetary carrier instead of two separate carriers (the ring and sun gears that complete the gear train are not shown here). Unless you opt for the company's billet replacement (see sidebar), Lentech leaves this bull-strong geartrain completely stock. In fact, we include this photo only because the planetary gearset is the key to how an auto tranny-with its totally linear power flow-works. Though we lack room here for a thorough discussion, suffice it to say that this one compact unit provides Neutral, reduc-tion gears, direct drive, Overdrive, and Reverse. View Related Article
