Auto Meter's Gauge Works A-pillar gauge holder comes in several styles and configurations. The add-on version is called a Gauge Pod, while the one shown here is a Full Pillar Pod. The Gauge Pod is available in single and dual pods, and the Full Pillar can be had in dual- or triple-pod configurations. While Auto Meter supplies the typical installation parts for the gauges and senders, occasionally additional parts will be necessary.
Horse Sense:
Auto Meter's Lunar gauges emit a green glow thanks to a thin layer of phosphor that's exposed to a mild electric charge. It's important to note that this phoshor has a lifespan-as does, say, a lightbulb-so Auto Meter recommends you wire these gauges to the factory headlight switch and dial back the power just a bit to extend their life.
Our 3G project has been supercharged for more than a year now. However, except for dyno testing-when gauges are temporarily connected-we've been flying blind without any way to know what our fuel-pressure or boost levels are when driving. Although we could have installed gauges in the 3g a long time ago, it was one of those things we put on the back burner. As we don't want you to make the same mistake, we're here to tell you: Get the proper gauges to monitor your blower, nitrous, stroker, or whatever you need to keep an eye on.
It's imperative you know what's going on with the fuel system when using forced induction of any kind (blower, turbo, nitrous). A weak or undersized fuel pump will register on a fuel-pressure gauge. Without a gauge, the problems could be masked by other potential problem areas, where parts swapping and money will finally be needed to find the culprit. But a simple gauge installation will let you know everything is in working order, or, if something does go wrong, you'll know in enough time to prevent further damage.
For forced-induction applications, the minimum gauges should include a fuel-pressure gauge and a boost gauge. For our 3g GT, we chose Auto Meter's white-faced Lunar series of gauges (which feature a similar illumination to our NR Auto El-Glo white-face gauge kit) in a 211/416-inch mounting size to fit into an Auto Meter Gauge Works A-pillar assembly (PN12120; '94-'00 211/416-inch Dual Full Pillar). The fuel-pressure gauge (PN5763; Fuel Pressure, 0-100 psi) uses an electric sender for easy installation and safety and will read up to 100 psi-perfect for blown EFI applications. For the boost gauge, we chose the popular combination vacuum/boost gauge (PN5701; Boost 30-in. Hg-Vac/20 psi). If you're serious about forced-induction monitoring and tuning, Auto Meter also has inlet tem-perature gauges, EGT gauges, air/fuel ratio gauges, and more to accurately monitor your ride.
As soon as Auto Meter has its new electric boost-gauge assembly ready, we'll upgrade our gauge setup and possibly switch to the new Cobalt series to match our NR Auto lighted gauge faces.
