Oiling the connecting-rod bearings begins with the main bearings, shownhere. Because of the angle at which the stock crankshaft main-to-rod oilpassages are drilled, it's necessary to partially groove the lower mainbearing inserts to ensure oiling the connecting rod at the criticaltime. Federal-Mogul sells these tri-metal bearings with just such a "3/4groove," which is what John uses. This oil-timing trick is importantonly at higher rpm. View Related Article
