Once the pinion depth has been correctly set, the last critical part of setting up the gear set is getting the carrier (ring gear) correctly positioned left-to-right relative to the pinion gear. This is done by both witnessing the pattern the gears make and having approximately 0.010 inch of backlash (play) between the ring-and-pinion gears.
