Project Pretty Ugly’s motivation starts with a Ford Racing Performance Parts’ Boss 351 engine block (PN M-6010-BOSS35195) that’s been given the D.S.S. Full CNC Level 20 Race prep treatment. The Boss block right out of the box is in semi-finished form, and therefore it must be machine-finished, according to D.S.S.’s co-owner, Tom Naegele. With the Level 20 CNC race prep, the block is squared in accordance with the crankshaft and camshaft centerlines, to ensure the decks are parallel to the crank centerline and that it is a true, 90-degree V-8. The block prep also affirms that cylinder bores are perpendicular to the crank centerline. Tom says since main bores and lifter bores are typically on the small side, D.S.S. align-hones the block to suit any application. Final honing is done in a Sunnen CV-616 automatic cylinder hone with deck plates. Tom says Level 20 block preparation is worth approximately 40 horsepower over traditional block prep.
