Horse Sense: AmericanMuscle.com stormed onto the scene with the S197 Mustang, but these days the company carries a robust lineup of gear for '79-to-present Mustangs. That lineup is steadily growing and, as evidenced by this car, the list of Fox Mustang hardware is at the forefront of the additions.
When seeking your next Mustang you can go about it in several ways. Most often it comes down to two main choices—a really nice car or a fixer-upper. Sometimes your direction may be dictated by your budget. A really nice car might just be out of your reach. However, even if you have the cash for a pristine stocker, it's often more fun to start with something that's a little rough around the edges and spend your hard-earned dollars making it your own.
If you're reading this magazine, you'll almost always go for the well-worn Mustang, opting to spend your time and effort to both rejuvenate and customize it to your liking. It's more work, but it's often less money and more fun. In the end, the results are more special to you than if you bought a pristine car.
Since the last Fox Mustangs rolled off the assembly line, these cars have developed a steady list of supporters. As cars that started out as receptacles of unbridled performance mods, they later became appreciated with the fondness that buoyed a market for restoration parts. In the ensuing years, a whole host of companies have come to support the Fox Mustang in a big way. One such company is AmericanMuscle.com.
Born of the S197 explosion in the mid-2000s, American Muscle quickly expanded its roster to support the same lineup of '79-to-present Mustangs that are our bread and butter. "We've always wanted to build a Fox-body project car, but we needed to make sure that the theme was something good!" said Shane Lesky, American Muscle's social marketing representative. "The '93 Cobra is still to this day an icon in the 5.0 Fox world, but we wanted to pick a car to show off how much the small restoration mods that we sell impact its looks. It just so happens that the one car Ford never made available was a convertible version of the legendary Cobra!"

When the company told us it was taking on a Fox restification project with the goal of building a '93 Cobra-style convertible, it grabbed our interest immediately. We wanted to cover it here, but it was already well on its way. As such, we just hit some of the highlights of this build's inception.
"Stage 1 and 2 made a huge impact on the reliability of the car. It's amazing what some spark plugs and wires will do! We were able to get the car running smoother and cooler than ever before with over 100,000 miles on the odometer," Shane added. "After that, the Cobra appearance really started to progress. New wheels and tires, a Cobra body kit, OE-style headlights, and we were feeling better about the car after it came back from paint. Obviously, with a fresh paint job came the need for a ton of resto parts to complement..."

"At this point in the project, we've got a few tricks up our sleeve. We want to add a lot of horsepower and really make sure we do justice to the Cobra name," Shane said. "We've considered quite a few different power adders, but the readers at 5.0 Mustang & Super Fords will have to wait and see!"
