Ever since Evolution Performance got its hands on a brand new 2013 Ford Shelby GT500, records have been shattered all over the place. This time, they brought the Grabber Blue Shelby -- the cover car of our December 2012 issue (peep the 5.0 plate) -- to the NMRA Maryland International Raceway to see what it would bring to the table. It brought the house. Driver, Nelson Whitlock, smashed the previously held 2013 GT500 quarter mile record with an 8.94 second run at 159 mph!

Last week we held our second-annual 5.0 West Open House event at our Source Interlink Media Tech Center in El Segundo, California. Mustang and Ford enthusiasts from all over Southern California and beyond were looking forward to the Fabulous Fords Forever show at Knott’s Berry Farm and we had the perfect set of pre-game activities last Friday (April 19) to help kick off their fun Ford weekend properly!

The Roush Stage 3 Mustang is back for 2014, and it’s better than ever. The RS3 Ford Mustang is the epitome of modern American muscle on steroids, putting its increased power to the pavement through Roush’s handling, braking, and other updates into one impressive package. Holding an elite spot between the Mustang GT and the Shelby GT500 is the vaunted Boss 302. Built as a sinewy, naturally aspirated corner carver, the Boss is better in every way than the GT, and came close to challenging the GT500 before the arrival of the world-beating '13 model. All told, the Boss is a lust-worthy auto in stock form.

It may seem hard to believe, but the 49th birthday of the Ford Mustang just passed this week, specifically April 17th. As if that wasn’t special enough, another milestone was accomplished at Ford’s Flat Rock Assembly Plant in Michigan -- the one-millionth Mustang rolled off of the assembly line at the automaker’s state-of-the-art Auto Alliance International plant.

While a good portion of our event coverage is predictable, every once in a while we're encouraged to play nice with our sister magazines. Your author received orders in January 2012: "You're going on Drag Week this year!" This directive was handed down from on high, so my schedule for September 9-14, 2012, was cast in stone.

Power-adder Coyote fans are a happy bunch. The free-breathing V-8 eagerly responds to power inducements, and enjoys well-engineered cooling and fuel systems. Up to the octane limits of pump gasoline—about 540 rear-wheel horsepower—making Coyote power is about as easy as howling at the moon.

Having visited MV Performance many times over the years, we know exactly what Paul Nemoga experienced on a daily basis. On our many trips to MV, we too would make our way through the parking lot, getting ideas and wanting to bring half of the cars home with us. Fortunately, we only spent a few days at a time at MV on tech projects, but Paul worked right across the street—he had to live it everyday. He had to see and hear all those Mustangs going in and out of the shop on a daily basis.

Sometimes in the process of trying to keep up with the newest developments in the ever-evolving Mustang world, you might assume we leave the older stuff behind. While we can say that's not the case, there's nothing like presenting a project to prove we're sincere when we say that all of the Ponies from the modern era are important.

Put away that winter gear, dig out your T-shirt with the catchy racing slogan, and prepare for the 15th NMRA Anniversary Tour! Get out to the racetrack this season and you'll behold the most magnificent array of Ford hot rods in the country, on-track and in the UPR Products All-Ford Auto Show & Shine.

If you are an active participant in pursuing horsepower with modern Mustangs, then you have heard of Lethal Performance. This growing concern started like most, with a wild idea, and it has prospered into a prominent force in the Mustang aftermarket. That stuff is obvious, but we rarely take the time to think about how such businesses begin.

Lava Lava
Steven and Julie McGuire own this Lava Red '12 Mustang GT. Yes, you read that right: Lava Red. I had to do a double-take as well. The car sure looks black to me, but that's the trick to Lava Red--it's sort of black. Having never seen one in person, we hear it's more of a dark maroon shade that often looks black. Editor Turner seems to think it's black with red highlights. (He should know a thing or two about highlights, so I can't argue with him.) All Steven and Julie know is that the car has participated in five car shows and won four First Place trophies and a Best-in-Show for Paint/Modern Car award. The couple's GT features a Brembo package, HID headlights, a UPR Products billet shift knob, Lloyd's 5.0 floormats, Redline Tuning hood struts, an Airaid cold-air intake with a Bama Performance tune, and a Flowmaster American Thunder axle-back exhaust. The Springfield, Missouri, couple used to own an '06 GT which they showed with some success, but since trading the '06 for the '12, their success has turned into an undefeated streak.

Following in the burnout marks of 5.0 Mustang pioneers like Brian Wolfe, Craig Radovich, Nitrous Pete Misinsky, and Stormin' Norman is a huge undertaking. However, just like those shootouts organized by Super Ford magazine back in the day, the current crop of Mustang pioneers are making their own mark in the hobby. These days guys such as Adam Browne of Revolution Automotive, Justin Burcham from JPC Racing, and Nelson Whitlock from Evolution Performance are paving the way for Coyote performance.

Horse Sense: Southeastern Fox-Bodies Mustang Club (www.southeasternfoxbodies.com) was formed because of the lack of a Fox-only group and to keep later model Mustangs from taking over. Basically, the club gives Fox owners the chance to come together and organize shows, cruises, and the like.

It’s easy to get swept up in the majesty of modern V-8 Mustang performance. Our magazine was born of V-8s, and we still spend most of our efforts regaling in the splendor of eight- cylinder muscle. Modern Mustangs are great, and their performance potential is seemingly limitless. However, if you plan to daily drive your Mustang and your funds aren’t unlimited, you might be drawn to the 3.7-liter V-6.

After my Coyote-powered '94 Cobra went down the road, I picked up a '01 Bullitt to replace it. Going from the rev-happy Four-Valve 5.0 Coyote to a pedestrian Two-Valve 4.6 is like going from dating Marisa Miller to looking for a mail-order bride. Sure, it's still a woman (you hope), but in both instances it's a huge downgrade.

Corn Compatible
If your Mustang runs on corn, check out Holley Performance Products' new E85-compatible, billet HP and Dominator fuel-system components. The use of E85 fuel is more taxing than gasoline, and the fuel-system components must also be E85 compatible. Holley says its HP and Dominator fuel pumps passed the 1,000-hour, heated E85 testing cycle to ensure durability. The corresponding HP and Dominator fuel-pressure regulators use a diaphragm material compatible with pump gas, diesel, alcohol, and of course, E85. Plus, Holley's HP and Dominator filters utilize E85-compatible Viton O-rings.

A lady with a Mustang. Good. A lady with her Mustang. Better. A lady in a Ford shirt with two Mustangs. Apparently, that's what it takes to win in an extremely competitive round of our BOTM Facebook poll. At least, that's the recipe William Stephens followed with his wife, Brandi, and their two 'Stangs.
