The Cobra's four-cam powerplant has been upgraded to 320 hp for 1999, but it sure didn't show in the mph at the track.

We just kept hoping we didn’t run into a kid whose parents had bought him a $22,000 GT and then added $6,000 worth of hopups. It wouldn’t even be close.

Jerry Rosenwald (left) is the sales manager at Bob Williams Ford in Cincinnati, Ohio, and we owe him for letting us test one of his brand-spankin'-new Cobras. He handed the keys over to Paul with nary a blink.

The IRS is the big news for 1999. Sure, it added European balance to the Mustang, but we aren't European. If you want big power from a four-cam Cobra, this is how you do it. We unlocked over 10 hp and close to 20 lb-ft of torque with heavy cooling at the track. This is a timeless trick that takes a little cash, some water, and a lot of patience.
