Even though the 5.8L engine is essentially identical in outward appearance to the 5.0, its extra .500-inch stroke makes it the motor we wish Ford had EPA-certified long ago. It is a beauty.

Note the Cobra snake winding its way through the R emblem on the wheel center section. This is the only badge that says R Competition Model on the entire car.

We got to know the new Cobra R by driving through 50 miles of early spring Carolina countryside in preparation for our track thrash. The car is noisier without the rear seat or sound insulation, but the power makes it all worth it.

The front hood of the R is made of fiberglass by a company called HO Tech and is finished by another company called Mascotech, both in the Dearborn area. The R is about 30 pounds lighter than the regular SVT Cobra. The heavier 5.8L engine and bigger cooling system offset the weight savings from creature comfort deletions. The R model sits about 3/4-inch lower than the regular SVT Cobra thanks to its special racing springs.

We had the track all to ourselves and tried a variety of different lines in an attempt to find the fastest. We also ran a few stock SVT Cobras (not R models) around the track so that we could compare the two. All laps were timed. Now, if we just didn&8217t spin out in turn three, we would have set the track record...

The actual production of the R model commenced on March 30, 1995. Every fourth car down the line was an R model. It took a lot of extra effort on the part of the managers and workers to ensure that all the Rs got the special components used only on them, while the other cars coming down the line got the regular parts. The DAP facility built all 250 cars in only three days. The UAW workers volunteered to work 24-hour shifts to get the cars done on time.

The cars were shipped from the DAP facility to Mascotech for installation of the special custom HD cooling system and the special 20-gallon rubberized Kevlar fuel cell. Those who raced the 1993 Cobra R complained of too small a fuel tank, forcing extra fuel stops in endurance races that cost them time and position on the track compared to the Camaros.

The interior only comes with cloth seats and manual windows and locks. True racers will gut the interiors anyway and install aluminum racing seats along with a full rollcage.

The special high-performance 351 engines utilizing cast-iron Cobra heads and intake manifold, as well as a healthy roller camshaft, were built at the Windsor, Canada, engine facility. All 250 were built on February 19, 1995 in a period of only 6.2 hours.

For those of you who missed out on buying a real Cobra R, we are pleased to tell you that it looks like almost every special component used on the 1995 Cobra R will be available separately, either from Ford SVO or from the original manufacturers that supplied SVT. How would that hood look on your Mustang? We&8217ll keep you informed in a separate article soon.

SVT did make a stab at a Cobra R model just a few short years ago with the 1993 model. It was way short on horsepower compared to the Camaros and needed a larger fuel tank. Only 107 were ever built.
