Shelby GT

Fans of the Shelby GT can rejoice. The historic manufacturer is bringing the popular Mustang variant back for buyers of '13-'14 Mustang GTs. Debuted at the Los Angeles Auto Show, the Shelby GT is available in naturally aspirated and supercharged versions ranging from 430 to 624 horsepower.

"The Shelby GT was one of the most important vehicles in modern- day Shelby history," said John Luft, president of Shelby American (www.shelbyamerican.com). "It kicked off Shelby's rebirth in Las Vegas by putting a Mustang-based small-block car into Ford dealerships. Ever since the Shelby GT went out of production, people have clamored for its return."

"Based on the standard Mustang GT, the total cost of our entry-level 2014 Shelby GT is only about $45,000, yet offers so much more than the previous model," said, Gary Patterson, Shelby American VP of Sales. "The performance-to-price ratio makes the Shelby GT perfect for any serious pony car enthusiast."

Buyers of the new Shelby GT will get a vehicle with a completely revamped visage courtesy of a Shelby GT front fascia, Shelby GT fiberglass hood, Shelby GT carbon laminated hood louvers, and unique 20x9-inch wheels wearing BFGoodrich tires. Backing up those revised looks performance mods, including a Borla exhaust, a Barton shifter, and a Panhard bar.

"While the Shelby GT is affordable for such an exclusive vehicle, a post title program allows us to take performance to new levels," said Shelby American VP of Production, Gary Davis. "Working with partners like Ford Racing, it is docile enough to be a daily driver and still dominate the track on the weekends."

Two of those new levels are 524- and 624-horsepower options. Both based on black or polished versions of the Ford Racing 2.3-liter supercharger. Along with the supercharger, these optional packages feature larger Wilwood brakes, Michelin Pilot Supersport tires, and GT/SC stripes. The higher output version is said to accelerate from 0-60 mph in about 3.7 seconds and eclipse the quarter-mile in the mid-11-second range. Of course, you can add even more peformance by adding additional hardware from the Shelby American parts line.

"No other carmaker offers this level of performance, heritage and iconic styling at this price, making the Shelby GT the best all-around American car in its class," John said. "Each car will be issued a Shelby American CSM number for documentation in our Shelby American Worldwide Registry to help maximize potential future value."

That value adds up to $14,995, on top of the vehicle price, while the Shelby GT/SC package starts at $27,995.

Regular readers will recall that we covered the installation and testing of ProCharger's variable-boost i-1 supercharger back in our June '13 issue ("Control Variable," p. 72). As a refresher, this supercharger offers three preset performance levels via an electronically controlled, constant- variable transmission in the supercharger. The system, also allows for a customized boost curve dialed in for your particular vehicle.

Well, ProCharger (procharger.com) now offers the systems as tuner kits for those wanting to customize their supercharger system to suit their modified engines. To test these systems, the company recently took out the car we used in our story for testing. That car now wears headers and a full exhaust. In this configuration, running 7.5 pounds of boost and pump gas, the car ran a 10.87 at 131 mph. That was accomplished with the car at 3,850 pounds.

Currently, these i-1 kits are available for Coyote-powered Mustangs. On top of the performance news, ProCharger also announced at the '13 SEMA show that these systems are now available with an optional black finish.


Kenny Concept

While the world was focused on the debut of the '15 Mustang, Kenny Brown (www.kennybrown.com) was busy hatching plans for what he would do with the next Mustang. What he has in mind is, you guessed it, more performance. However, that increased performance would come in streetable and race-worthy levels. To bring those ideas to life, Kenny turned to Jim Gerdom (www.designfactoryart.com) for these GT3 and GT3R concept illustrations.

From working on the early Saleen championships to building his own line of performance vehicles, Kenny is known for improving Mustang performance, particularly its handling, courtesy of his Advanced Geometry Suspensions. His company currently markets GT4 conversions for '11-'14 Mustangs, including the sport-touring GT4, the supercharged GT4-S, the Club Sport GT4-CS, and the race-oriented GT4-RS. He is obviously ready to continue tweaking the forthcoming Mustang.

"Should there be interest, the Kenny Brown GT3 Mustang Concept will be a formidable, no-compromise driver's car for road, track days, or racing and a fantastic showcase for our products and capabilities." Kenny said, "With the intent of the new Mustang to be a world car and the continuing growth of GT3 versions of the world's best sports cars, a GT3 Mustang Concept seems contemporary and a natural progression."

GT 1000

What's cooler than a Ford GT? Well, not much really, but there's one thing that can make this supercar even sexier— 1,000 hp.

Kelly Bise headed to KP Racing (www.kpracing.com) in Houston, Texas, and asked for just that. To fulfill yhe order, the team at KP added a 4.0-liter supercharger, Borla long-tube headers, and a custom calibration by Joe Honeycutt. That resulted in 816 hp and 738 lb-ft of torque at the rear wheels on KP's Mustang Dynamometer, which puts it right around 1,000 hp at the crank.

"The other great thing about this package that we put together is that when he is ready to sell the vehicle in the future, it will be easy to put back to stock," noted the KP team. "Being able to put the car back to stock is desirable because of the ever increasing value of the Ford GT, and potential buyers wanting an unmodified vehicle."

That resulted in 816 HP and 738 lb-ft of torque at the rear wheels on KP's Mustang Dynamometer, which puts it right around 1,000 hp at the crank.

Scary Spin

I'm in the Navy, stationed onboard the U.S.S. Harry S. Truman CVN75, and I am currently on a 9-month deployment. I just received the September issue ("Top Notch") in a care package from my family. I have owned and loved Mustangs my entire life and this is by far my favorite magazine.

Your editorial (Love Hurts) was exactly the same experience I went through right before deployment started. I own an '07 Shelby GT500 and it's the best car I have ever owned—I love it more than anything. I worked my way up from numerous Two-Valve GTs and one Roush 427R, and I finally got one of the Shelbys.

Anyway, I was driving down highway 17, a two-lane highway just like the one pictured, crossing through the Virginia/North Carolina border, and it started to downpour. Immediately I pulled to the right lane and slowed down to about 50, not even under throttle, and out of nowhere, about 5 minutes later, I felt like I hit an ice rink and lost control completely, slid across the median and into oncoming traffic on the other side. You are lucky you stopped in the middle. There was only one truck coming the other way, and thankfully he had room to stop before T-boning my baby.

Long story short, the front bumper was destroyed, the A/C condenser was bent into a V shape, and the alignment was nonexistent. It's all fixed now and was put away in storage. It was a scary experience which I hope to never go through again.

I wasn't scared in the moment, but after it happened and the reality sunk it, I realized how fortunate I was. In your case, I am glad you are OK and your car is back in one piece. I hope neither one of us has such an experience again.

Fox-Haters Club

As a longtime reader of your 5.0&SF magazine I would like to register my first and only complaint, I live in South West Florida where we have many car and Mustang shows year around,and the buzz lately has been the number of articles in your magazine about the Fox Mustangs. Some love them and a lot of us hate them. I for one would like to see more on the '05 to '14 model years, or at the least less Fox articles,other than this I love your mag and look forward to reading it every month minus the Fox articles.

If you're a longtime reader, Kenneth, then you have to at least appreciate that without the Fox Mustang, this magazine wouldn't exist. As such, we don't plan to leave it behind. I certainly get that everyone wants to read more about the car that they own. I understand that. What I don't get is why, especially in today's political climate, that if people don't agree with something, they have to escalate it right to hate without passing go.

It's OK if you don't care for Fox Mustangs, but don't hate. You can just turn the page until you get to an '05-and-up story. However, you better settle in because the S550 is about to add a whole new layer of Mustang owners to keep happy. How will you feel when an owner of one of these newer cars urges us to leave your "old" Mustang behind and pursue more stories on these cars?

I Feel Your Pain

I'm sitting here reading your Love Hurts piece about wrecking PVT, and I can't help but think about my own experience. It happened the same exact way in my '03 Cobra in May 2009 in a storm on I-95 in Florida. It sucked—I loved that car. Granted it turned into a Vapor Silver GT500, but it's not the same as the other car.

Sorry about the wreck. Hopefully they're able to get it back to the condition it was prior.

Likewise, Brian, I am sad to hear of your accident. I never owned a Terminator, but I've always loved them from afar. I can imagine losing one would be tough. That said, I have to compliment your choice of replacement vehicle! Seriously, I'm glad you are OK and I hope you are loving the GT500.

Editor Turner obviously hit his head on a Saleen wing before writing up our Battle at the Beach story in the Jan. '04 issue ("Freaks of the Week," p. 64).
