The MSD Super Street Outlaw class has become lovingly known as "The 10-Inch-Tire Freak Show" because of the wild cast of characters it attracts. Big wheelies, lots of tire spin, and wild downtrack side-to-side action all happen here. Super Street Outlaw is a professional-level drag racing class where small-block and big-block Ford engines power small-tired seven- and eight-second '64-and-up Ford Mustangs and '79-and-up Fox-chassis Fords to amazing e.t.'s. The biggest handicap in this class is the mandated 28.6x10.6-maximum measured rear slick with a stock-type or ladder-bar rear suspension. Small-block cars with nitrous will weigh 2,800 pounds, small-block cars with a supercharger or turbocharger will weigh 3,000 pounds, and big-block cars will weigh 3,200 pounds. All these cars run an automatic transmission. In eliminations, there will be an all-run field run on a pro-tree (0.400) NHRA Sportsman ladder.
One to Watch:
The big news for 2004 is that former world-record holder Tim Lynch will return to Super Street Outlaw along with his engine builder/crew chief Steve "Dishrag" Petty. Also, watch for the return of Baby Blue, the legendary '89 5.0 LX hatchback, under the new ownership of Michael Young.
Quick Fact:
NMRA's SSO is home to the largest field in all of heads-up drag racing. It's not uncommon to see more than 30 cars in competition at one race. And, don't think those guys at the back of the pack can't step it up on race day to take down some of the big boys. Case in point: Glen Rollinger as the No. 29 qualifier ran through the entire field at the Bowling Green, Kentucky, World Finals to win his first event at NMRA-which also happens to be the biggest SSO race of the year!
