Guess by now you've noticed that Kevin Wolbach seems to have a thing for black. Yup, even his ride's headlights, foglights, parking lights and taillight lenses are all dark smoked so as not to detract from its polished-anthracite presentation. As a photographer, I usually run screaming from black cars -- especially on mid-day photo shoots -- but the overall quality of execution on Kevin's gothic '06 GT was enough to overcome my ingrained reservations when I came across it at last summer's Carlisle Ford Nationals (and, yes, the partly cloudy weather helped).
The coal-dark coupe is this 49-year-old's first Mustang, though Kevin had previously owned and modified some '60s and '70s Ford muscle -- all formally attired in black, of course. After several intervening years of messing with ATVs to try and satisfy his need for speed, the Pennsylvania resident finally bought this S197 used, in September 2007. It then served as his daily commuter for two years before his penchant for perfection finally got the best of him and he decided the coupe would see only weekend/casual use from then on. And no more winters.
Among the GT's first upgrades were a pair of 12-inch Cerwin Vega subwoofers, a Crunch PowerZone 3,000-watt amp, and an Eclipse head unit with DVD and navigation. But that was only the beginning, with Kevin eventually taking some construction jobs on the side (he's a production manager by day) to fund and support his "obsession."
As for its looks, Kevin explains: "I never set out with any specific plans for the car, but I knew I wanted something different, and I would not put on any pre-packaged body kit." Thus we see such items as a carbon-fiber hood from Body Armor, a Boy Racer wing from 3dCarbon, a Cervini's Type II chin spoiler, MRT's aluminum rear-window louvers; a Street Scene rear valance, various Xenon scoops, Extreme Dimensions Racer side skirts, and an Eleanor-style grille, all coexisting and somehow looking cohesive -- as if he'd had a plan from day one.

We don’t know whether Kevin chose Edelbrock’s E-Force supercharger simply because it brought along the most black components, but the Eaton TVS-based kit, along with Comp Mutha Thumper cams and some BBK equal-length headers, all result in 505 rwhp and 472 lb-ft of torque from this Three-Valve 4.6.
The GT’s seat covers have...
The GT’s seat covers have a carbon-fiber look and grippy suede inserts. Kevin has tucked air/fuel and boost gauges in the two inner-most vent openings, below which is wired a Ford GT-style starter button. The rear seat is gone, replaced with a custom upholstered panel with Plexiglas windows to show off some of the coupe’s audio gear.
Peek under that carbon-fiber hood and you'll see yet more black in the form of Edelbrock's E-Force (2.3-liter TVS) supercharger kit with its matching coil covers, though the dark blower is accented by some surrounding brushed or polished aluminum tanks and hardware. Paired with some Comp Cams Mutha Thumper bumpsticks, the otherwise-stock 4.6-liter is good for 505 hp and 472 lb-ft at the rear wheels, according to a conservative Mustang Dyno.
Despite such commendable power, Kevin's primary focus for the coupe since '09 has been shows. "I spend the winter months researching and buying parts to improve the car for the upcoming show season. The car is shown and driven every weekend from as early as March through November, with the occasional mid-week cruise." When we last spoke with him in October, he had already collected 35 trophies in the 2011 season alone.
If you see him at a show, he can likely answer any detail question about his GT with certainty. "All parts purchased and work done to the car have been documented in a three-ring binder since the day I bought it," says Kevin. "All the costs are tracked in an Excel spreadsheet to try and keep my obsession in check. These have been useful at shows, because people always want to know where I got a specific part and what it cost."
And he isn't done yet. "Future plans for the car (I still have the darn modification bug) are a built bottom end, more boost, safety/suspension upgrades, a performance clutch, drag radials, additional gauges, more shows, more shelves for trophies, and then a few passes at the track."
Sure beats ATVs, doesn't it, Kevin?
