There are some wicked Toyota Supras running around on the streets. We're sure you've seen quite a few with big turbos on them making in excess of 700-800hp from a straight six-cylinder engine. Quite the feat with such a small displacement, but most of their performance attributes don't show up at the dragstrip, which means they usually leave their power displays for 60-mph-up contests. Most Mustangs are the total opposite. It's fairly easy to set up a Mustang for the dragstrip, but our favorite ponycar isn't really set up for top-end racing-its factory braking systems leaving much to be desired. One Mustang owner who set out to beat those Supras at their own game, however, is Orlando, Florida's Willie Mejias.
Willie traded his first Mustang, an '89 GT, for the '95 GT you see here. Somehow, he was able to last the first 5 years of ownership without succumbing to the pressure of the aftermarket. But, once the last stub left the GT's payment book with his fiance's financial help, he fell off the stock wagon and hit his head hard, adding more performance than Ford ever dreamed.
"We decided to make the car a little faster," Willie says. Obviously, he had more financial backing for the modification part of the car as well. Round one of upgrades included a pair of Trick Flow Twisted Wedge aluminum heads, 24-lb/hr injectors, a Holley SysteMAX II intake, and a Nitrous Works nitrous kit. The car responded with a 12.80 at 115 mph on street tires. "I needed to be a little faster than that," Willie says, "so I bought a Vortech S-Trim supercharger." A return trip to the track resulted in a 12.63 at 117 mph. "That was good," Willie adds, "but not enough."
Yes, you are correct, Willie couldn't resist spraying 75hp worth of the sauce with the blower. You're wincing right now because you know what's coming next, don't you? The first pass was an 11.90 at 122 mph, but the second pass hung a rod outside the block. You can open your eyes now.
This presented Willie with the opportunity to step up the power with a 331 using an FRPP Sportsman block with his existing top end. Willie did fatten the air/fuel mixture by adding a set of 42-lb/hr injectors, and he drove the car from Orlando to LaRocca's Performance in New Jersey to dial in the combination. When the rollers stopped at LaRocca's, Willie was rewarded with 580 hp and 543 lb-ft of torque. Not only that, but Willie also managed an 11.13 at 131 mph on Nitto drag radials with 15 pounds of boost from the little Vortech. Happy with these results, Willie remained with that combo for roughly a year.
"I wanted more power so I bought a Vortech T-Trim," Willie says. On his first drag-strip trip, he blew what he thought was just a head gasket. Willie called Jake Lamotta of Lamotta's Performance in Longwood, Florida, to diagnose the exact problem. What he thought was a blown head gasket turned out to be two cracked pistons and a damaged Sportsman block.
"That's when I decided to go all out with the car," Willie says. "Jake Lamotta gave me a combination capable of making the car as fast as I wanted." Keeping the powerplant homegrown, Willie contacted Central Florida Motorsports for many of the new parts, including many bottom-end components. He then took the parts to Central Florida Machine and Speed for the machine work on the new Dart block and the addition of the new components. With the short-block back at Lamotta's Performance, Jake and the boys added a pair of Edelbrock Victor Jr. heads and a Victor 5.0 intake, along with an Aeromotive fuel system, a MAC exhaust system featuring long-tube headers and a 3-inch Pro Chamber H-pipe, and a 3-inch after-cat.
Learning from past mistakes, Willie had the tune-up checked prior to making a trip to the dragstrip. For this, he turned to Central Florida Turbo's Rolo Lopez, Javier Correa, and Sergio Reyes, who installed a Microtech Single Management Computer system along with 96-lb/hr injectors. With Rolo at the laptop, the car hammered out 748 hp and 698 lb-ft of torque at 19 pounds of boost from the T-Trim. Back at the track, the car turned in a robust 11.03 at a blistering 141 mph-and that was with a 2.08 60-foot time. Of course, this time drew the attention of the track's tech staff, which will prohibit Willie from running the car again until he has a 'cage in it.
Well, those times and power numbers would be good enough for most people, but Willie isn't most people, so yes, the car went under the knife again. Obviously, at the car's power level there was only one way to go, and that was a turbocharger. Willie once again turned to Central Florida Turbo for a Precision Turbo GT-42 Super 76 single turbo with a custom intercooler. Central Florida Turbo built the kit and tuned the car with help from Lamotta's Performance. The car made 959 hp and 1,023 lb-ft of torque at 25 pounds of boost on a Mustang Dynamometer. The car still doesn't have a 'cage, but now it has Corbeau seats with five-point harnesses.
Willie doesn't want to give away the car's capability to just anyone, and he still drives it every day with power steering, A/C, and everything still on the car. It seems Willie likes to mess with the dyno-queen Supras around the Central Florida region, which so far have been unable to handle his turbo-charged truth. But with more than 950 hp on tap, not many can.
