Every 5.0&SF reader wants to own a special Mustang. But as there are so many 'Stangs on the road, it's hard to pull it off without totally Melvining out-breaking down the car's VIN number to the nth degree, or telling everyone your GT was the only white one built between 8:35 a.m. and 8:36 a.m. on Wednesday, October 6.
Aside from specialty or rare models such as the Cobra R, a Mustang is a Mustang is a Mustang. And while you can do things to make them look different from the everyday variety, it's still a Mustang. The important thing is, however, you own one.
One person determined not to own an average Mustang is Foley, Missouri's Frank Harris. "When I first saw my car," Frank says, "I was actually [looking to buy] a car for my wife." We've heard that line more than once. When Frank saw the car sitting on the showroom floor, he knew it would be his, and a week later, it was. "It was really neat to see them open the showroom doors so I could drive my new car home," he says. Of course, the first place he took the GT was to his wife, Lisa's, place of work. "She had no idea I had just bought it," Frank says. Most guys wouldn't be able to pull that off-unless the car was for her, that is.
"I have always owned Mustangs, but this one was different," Frank says. And even though he won a few car-show awards with the car in showroom stock form, he wanted to make it really different. That led him to the Shinoda Mustang Web site (www.teamshinoda.com).
"I started talking to them [Shinoda] and we developed a plan," Frank says. With his experience with Mustangs, he obviously knew the name Larry Shinoda, so he decided to make his car a tribute to the '70 Boss 302 Mustang. "This was different than even the Shinoda cars they have, so we came up with the name "Legacy,'" Frank says. He tried to carry over as many features as possible from the '70 Boss to his GT without totally copying the look of the Boss. "It has reflective stripes, window louvers, and a functional shaker," Frank says. The car gained Shinoda certification, and the Boss Shinoda Legacy GT was born. As such, Frank's GT is number 001.
Once the car was done, Frank again hit the show fields in the Midwest. Even with the current show trend toward multimedia systems, Frank's Boss took home the trophies. Of course, it wasn't long before Frank was ready to take the Boss to the next performance level, and with a 4.6 GT, that usually means a supercharger. But adding a supercharger and the requisite plumbing to a Two-Valve with a shaker setup isn't a common mod.
This time Frank ended up on Mustang Muscle and Dyno Service's doorstep in St. Louis, Missouri. "I took my car to them and we installed a Vortech supercharger with an aftercooler (drawing) through the shaker system," Frank says. He knew of few cars featuring the same setup. "It took a lot of work and a lot of custom pipes."
Once the installation was finished, Frank took the car to Apten Performance for fine-tuning. There, Superchips tuner Brian Herron worked endlessly to tune the car. "I like dealing with people like me who don't give up until it's right," Frank says.
After the tune-up, Frank added Ford Racing Performance Parts 3.73 gears, Shinoda Boss valve covers, and a '70 Boss-style Hurst shifter complete with a chrome T-handle. "I know my car is the only one in Missouri with a rear taillight that lights up the Boss Shinoda Legacy GT 001," Frank says. "It is so cool to look in the mirror and see people pointing to my car. I know they're saying, 'I have never seen that.'"
