Of that effort, Dwayne says, "Of all the races I've won ... to look back at that ... that was the deal ... we did it from behind. After the trophy presentation, pictures, and interview for the video, we left St. Louis at midnight. I drove all the way home, and I went right to work that morning at 9:00 a.m. without any sleep. I was so amped up!"
In after-season testing, the notchback was set up with 4.88 gears, 2,920 pounds, and a 5,500-rpm launch-to avoid a destructive wheelie. The result was a jaw-dropping 10.28 e.t. at close to 130 mph. It looks as if our Real Street guys had better make a class for the Pure Streeters at next year's Outlaw Nationals!
Speaking of wheelies, Pure Street has become home to some awesome wheelstand shows. Dwayne says he's afraid to tighten up the shocks-afraid he'll blow the tires off the car instead of stand it straight up-if you can imagine such a thing. "It gives me a little more entertainment," he says. "If I lose a round, at least I get to ride out a wheelie. I just let it rip, go full throttle, and shift it whenever it starts coming down!"How's that for a rush?
