John and his son Mike have made working on this 5.0 notchback a labor of love. With some well-chosen bolt-ons and the right safety equipment, the car busts off 10.60s with ease. The classic lines of the coupe are set off with Weld Draglite rims, a Cervini's 211/42-inch cowl hood, and factory titanium paint. It all adds up to a timeless combination.
The nice stance of the car comes courtesy of an Eibach Drag Launch spring kit (with the airbag in the right rear spring to account for preload), Lakewood 70/30 struts in the front and 50/50 units at the rear, and boxed FRPP upper control arms and HP Motorsport Mega-Bite Jr. lower control arms. Mickey Thompson front-runners and 26x10.5-inch ET Drag slicks provide the stick for 1.40 short times. The FRPP aluminum driveshaft spins a Strange spool, FRPP 4.10 gears, and Moser 31-spline race axles with C-clip eliminators. John made sure the car would stop within the given shutdown area at their local track (New York International Raceway Park in Leicester, New York) by adding heavy-duty Bendix pads to the stock calipers.
Mike Monahan handled the buildup of the family motivator, while Matt Shaft at Performance Specialties added machine work. A D.S.S. 306ci bottom end features a stock 0.030-over block, a stock race-prepped crank, Crower Sportsman rods, and 9.5:1 TRW pistons. Rick Anderson had JDC port the Edelbrock Performer heads and Edelbrock Performer RPM intake. The heads hold 1.90-inch intake and 1.60-inch exhaust valves that are worked over by a custom Bennett Racing nitrous camshaft. John tells us the cam has 0.566-inch intake and 0.576-inch exhaust lift numbers, but he'd rather not say what the duration numbers hold. Stud-mount Crane rockers, Crane dual-spring valvesprings, Crane roller lifters, and titanium retainers are just some of the other goodies found throughout the valvetrain.
A conical K&N air filter, a Pro-M 80mm mass air, and a 70mm BBK throttle body feed the hungry Ford. John selected an Aeromotive fuel system front to back-including the sumped tank, fuel rails, and regulator-to feed the Ford Racing Performance Parts 36-lb/hr squirters. MSD components make up the ignition system. The exhaust consists of MAC 131/44-inch long-tubes with a 3.5-inch collector, a MAC Pro Chamber H-pipe, and a Flowpath after-cat. John and Mike's power adder of choice is an NOS Big Shot nitrous-oxide system. For now, they've jetted it for a 200hp kick in the butt, although as soon as the new motor shows up (with more main webbing), look for a harder hit. Also on board is a purge system, a bottle heater, and a bottle blanket to enhance the juice. It all adds up to 540 horses of fun!
