1987 Ford Mustang Gt Nmra Race Champion Saleen Wing
Through much testing, Michael discovered his Saleen wing was costing him 1 mph, so he removed it for a couple races. But he didn't like the wingless look, so he called up Chapel Auto Wrecking for a Capri bubble hatch. He fitted the hatch to his car, earning the nickname Bubble Boy in the process. And, although he says he still doesn't like the look much, he can fit more contingency stickers on the hatch as compared to a stock Mustang's. The hood is a carbon-fiber unit from Kirkman Composites, a company Michael heard about through fellow Factory Stocker Robin Lawrence. Monocoque wheels combine with genuine Saleen ground effects to make the car a nice package-except for maybe the hatch. (We couldn't resist.)

Of course, to make every NMRA race takes dedication and a lot of help. Michael would like to thank his wife, Deborah; Kuntz and Company; LaRocca's Performance; Metco; Unorthodox Race Cars; Sal Arena; Scott Hannigan; friends Jamie, Barry, and Chris; Justin's Performance Center; Centerforce; Chapel Auto Wrecking; Robin Lawrence; Rich Groh; Mike Groh; and Noodles. Along with Michael, we want to thank the guys at his firehouse known as the Flaming Skulls, Ladder 116 and Engine 261, and all fire-fighters everywhere.

Kuntz and Company built the engine in Michael's car, while tuning props go to LaRocca's Performance. Michael is always playing with different induction setups to maximize e.t. potential. The block is a '69 302 block bored 0.030 over and filled with a stock crankshaft, Eagle rods, and Ross pistons. Kuntz also prepped the GT-40 heads, which are topped with T&D rockers and Comp Cams valvesprings.

Jaz racing seats and a Tony's Metal Craft 10-point cage spell out the car's drag-race orientation. Where our tech sheet asks for handling numbers, Michael wrote: "You're kidding, right? The steering wheel is used to line up the car in the beams only." Various Auto Meter gauges provide information as to what's going on, while Michael bangs the gears via a Pro-5.0 shifter with a Hurst handle.
