With MavroMont Industries' new 17-inch Pony R wheels, the looks of our Mustang take a giant leap forward. The combination of a black car with chrome wheels is hard to beat, even with our coupe's suffering paint.
Until the '95 Cobra R unveiled the now-famous Cobra R wheel, the most desired wheel was no doubt the Pony. As soon as the Pony wheel was introduced on the '91-'93 5.0 LX and GT models, owners of earlier-year Fox Mustangs ran to their nearest dealership, salvage yard, or aftermarket wheel manufacturer to get a set of their own.
The Pony wheel design was a welcome substitution for turbine and 10-hole renditions found on previous Fox Mustangs. The turbine wheel, which was available on '87-'90 Fox GTs, was difficult to keep clean, and the 10-hole was only a 15-inch design. The 10-hole didn't allow you to fill the fenderwells of a 16-inch or larger wheel. However, the 10-holes still are excellent wheels for mounting slicks.
We tried a set of four-lug, 17-inch Pony R wheels in chrome, and we're here to tell you they rock the house. Though we don't have large-diameter brake rotors on our LX (yet), just the addition of chrome Pony wheels-and in a 17-inch design-makes our coupe that much more attractive, even though the car could really use new paint (shut up, Turner and Houlahan!).
To encase our Pony R wheels,...
To encase our Pony R wheels, we chose Nitto Extreme NT555 ZR treads. Up front, we decided on 235/45s to keep tire rub to a minimum. We were concerned this size tire would be too small for the wheel, but the combination looks quite nice. Out back, we went with 255/45s to get the largest contact patch we could without rolling our quarter-panel lips.
The introduction of the 16-inch Pony wheel in 1991 also necessitated a fender design change. To accommodate the larger wheels, Ford increased the fenderwell opening by a half inch on the front side of the fender. Even so, early Fox owners have performed a million Pony wheel swaps with minimal fender interference. However, telltale signs of tire rub will most commonly show up on the inner fender or framerail.
More than anything else, the Pony wheel was much better looking than the turbine or the 10-hole. Many people added the Pony wheels to simply update the look of their Fox Mustangs
With advancements in brake technology and rotor sizes, Fox Mustang owners have had to either ditch the Pony wheels for 17-inch wheels or stick to smaller-diameter brake-rotor packages. But with the introduction of MavroMont Industries' new 17-inch Pony R wheel, that's no longer the case. With this new design, Fox Mustang owners can have their cake and eat it too. The 17-inch Pony R wheel enables you to add larger, 13-inch brake packages, while maintaining the awesome, classic look of a Pony wheel.
