What To Expect From The Upcoming Season Of NMRA Racing
If you've checked out the '10 schedule, you noticed that there's an additional non-points race on the calendar. This race brings all-Ford action back to the Mustang stronghold of Georgia, so we're expecting some big crowds in Commerce, Georgia.
2010 NMRA Keystone Automotive Ford Nationals
For Blue Oval fanatics across the nation, there's a party coming to nine exceptional locations around the country this year. The NMRA Keystone Automotive Ford Nationals will offer fierce heads-up, bumper draggin' action from classes as divergent as the 10-inch-tire Freak Show known as Super Street Outlaw to the consistent competitors in Open Comp. Racers will face the hottest competition from around the country. To win in the NMRA, you have to beat the best!
Fans and racers will behold the most magnificent array of Blue Oval hot rods-both old and new-in the UPR Products all-Ford Auto Show & Shine, 300-plus-mph jet-car runs, burnout contests, and more. In addition, these events are a bargain shoppers' paradise as each event assembles one of the largest manufacturers' midways and oodles of swappers ready to negotiate hot deals. In short, if you are into high-performance Fords, you'll find something to enjoy at the NMRA events.
This class attracts the fastest and quickest Ford-powered 10.5W Mustang and Ford-bodied Outlaw streetcars from the deep South, up the East Coast, and throughout the Midwest. They will commence a full-scale invasion of the series as combatants attempt to exhibit their turbocharged, nitrous oxide-injected, or supercharged muscles while bankrolling the big purse and contingency cash. Combatants will annihilate the 10.5Wx33-inch drag slicks past the eighth-mile cones to get them hot and sticky before attempting to hook the nearly 3,000 hp for at least 1,320 feet in just over 6 seconds.

E.T.: Dan Millen, 6.69 seconds
MPH: Mike Murillo, 224.74 mph
Livernois Motorsports partner and 2009 champ Dan Millen has one of the most high-tech racing shops and staff at his disposal and it shows. Ten-time former champ Mike Murillo's sick big-block, twin-turbo '93 coupe Dark Star car settled for two early season wins, finished second in 2009 and has plans for one more move in the points. Conrad Scarry's twin-turbo '04 Cobra won the title in 2008 and put it on the roof in early 2009, but by the end of the season he was back in championship form, hungry for his title back. Transmission-wizard Keith Neal's '04 Cobra is one of the only twin-turbo, small-block entries; he got a win at the season opener and a runner-up at the finals. Watch out if they put a full season together. Jim Brown fields the lone nitrous-oxide car; he got his first win at the finals and could be a dark horse in the chase.
Super Street Outlaw
Blaring echoes of supercharged engines; the wheezing sneeze of spooled-up turbocharger wastegates dumping boost after leaving the water box; or the tell-tale frosty purge skyward of a triple-stage, nitrous oxide-injected big-block are all sights and sounds of the wildest, most unpredictable class in Ford drag racing-the 10-inch-tire Freak Show. The narrowly adequate, 28.6x10.6-inch mandated rear slick guarantees side-by-side slippery action from start to stripe, so grab the edge of your seat and prepare to witness some of the wildest rides you'll ever see in 7.5 seconds.

MPH: John Urist, 195.78 mph
The Hellion boys probably show up in the nightmares of Super Street Outlaw competitors across the country. They visited five out of seven finals en route to John Urist's fifth title, the fourth in a row. John MacDonald's 388-cube ProCharger combination and nitrous-wizard Don Burton's Fulton big-block Fox both visited the finals on three occasions; both picked up a win and ended up a mere 15 points apart by the season's end. Chris Tuten has won multiple titles in a couple classes in the same '87 hatchback, now powered by a turbocharged 360-cube combo.
There is a new fad sweeping the country in drag racing-racers are trading the mushy-sidewall slicks for purpose-built drag radials. BFGoodrich Drag Radial has become the biggest, most-contested class of the series. You'll see lots of seemingly slow launches, but watch-out as these guys have a tendency to put it on the bumper at about the 330-foot markers as the frightening amounts of power kicks in, making for some breathtaking side-by-side action.

E.T.: Sean Lyon, 7.95 seconds
MPH: Dave Guy, 182.18 mph
Jason Lee's '86 'Stang spent most of the '08 season on the bumper, but he settled it down in 2009, marching to his first championship. Lyons Motorsports helped put Canadian Enzo Pecchini's ProCharged '88 coupe in four final-round appearances and captured his first win. Now he's focused on number one. David Guy changed his supercharged '96 Renegade to a turbocharger to run Drag Radial and laid down a blistering 7.91 in his first season. Sean Lyon finds consistency in his Panhandle Performance turbocharged coupe, tickling the 7-second zone at nearly every event, downing the champ at the season finale. The turbocharger gang of Matt Bell and his wild wrapped Fox hatch, Orson Johnson's wheelstanding SN-95 drop-top, and Ken Ewer's Fox coupe (pictured) will be hunting the ProCharged ponies. Keep an eye out for the surprise performance from Steve Thompson's stock-appearing, nitrous-powered coupe.
It will be standing room only, 'cause no wheelie bars are allowed in this class. At this power level, at least one or two of the players usually end up dragging the bumper cover off. EFI Renegade is reserved for fuel-injected, automatic-transmission cars-no turbochargers allowed. If you want to win in this class, you will have to choose from the list of acceptable non-intercooled street-oriented blowers or multiple stages of juice.

E.T.: Alton Clements, 8.38 seconds
MPH: Alton Clements, 165.27 mph
The Clements family's 4.6 Four-Valve-powered Fox coupe earned a trip to the finals in the last two '09 events, set both ends of the record, and won the championship. Big Dan Rawls set the record several times in 2009 with his giggle-gas-enhanced, Lightning-laden Fox en route to a two-out-of-three final-round record. Bart Tobener's Vortech-blown, Navigator 5.4-powered '93 coupe rocketed it's way to three consecutive finals. Brian Tuten's docile-looking, nitrous-injected coupe picked up a win and Larry Hourcle's Ed Thomas-tuned, blown'88 LX hatch stomped the competition on the back half of the season. Chris Van Gilder's blown convertible may be the dark horse of the class.
No whining allowed, 'cause old-school horsepower is the only path in Hot Street. You will adore the sweet sounds of a small-blocks wound up to 10,000 rpm. These cars feature powerplants from the top engine builders in the country. These builders showcase their talents in the NMRA's version of Pro Stock-small-block Ford-style.

MPH: Charlie Booze Jr., 157.89 mph
Coal-miner Don Bowles resurrected a '70 Maverick, made five finals, and collected two wins and his first championship at 71 years young! Robby Blankenship introduced a gorgeous '04 Cobra and won the 2008 title. He won two final rounds in 2009, just missing a title repeat. Mad Max Gross left his coupe at home to pilot the Team Powerhead '89. Former champ Charlie Booze backed up both ends of the record for the second consecutive year. He's been NMRA and NMCA champ simultaneously-a dangerous threat. Manual-transmission wizard Bangin' Bob Hanlon's infamous slapstick '79 is capable of out-rowing any of the autos. Roush engine builder Ben Mens is always a threat, and Downs Racing Rick Riccardi's Capri knocked down some pretty stout numbers by year's end.
Real Street is at the perfect power-to-weight ratio for cars to tickle the bumper on every pass, and second gear always comes with the wheels two feet in the air. This is a drivers' class that offers lots of side-by-side bumper draggin' action. No exotic engine combos or tricked-out automatics allowed in Real Street. It's small motors, single power adders, and banging gears just like the street cars that inspired the class.

E.T.: Bruce Hemminger, 9.59 seconds
MPH: Tim Matherly, 146.05 mph
Tim Matherly's wheel-standing Pony captured the class top honors in 2009. He now has four championships and two runner-ups in the last six years. Look out for his sick new '10 race car, taking Mustang racing to the next generation. Last years' champ Bruce Hemminger's JPC-sponsored, nitrous-oxide-injected ride has won all seven finals he's competed in over the past two years. Jim Breese's Cobra rocks a ProCharged 4.6 Two-Valve engine-an unseasonable Breese could blow through the field on any weekend. Newcomer Dave Ginter's blown Two-Valve SN-95 and veteran Paul Wiley's supercharged Windsor snuck into the finals on two occasions, with Matt Johnson's wicked, bottle-fed baby not far behind.
All the '79-and-newer Mustangs will brush the bumper on every launch without the danger of unloading the rear tires in Pure Street. So if it's big-wheelie, all-motor action you crave, you don't want to miss this class. No huge camshafts or monster displacements are allowed in Pure Street, with only 0.500-maximum-lift Windsors, and 0.550- or 0.480-lift Two, Three, and Four-Valve mod-motors will take despicable amounts of duration to extend ranges to upward of 9,000 rpm.

E.T.: Ryan Hecox, 10.12 seconds
MPH: Steve Gifford, 133.38 mph
High Flyin Ryan Hecox powershifted his silver Cobra to five final-round appearances, claiming the '09 title by a mere 25 points. Mark Anderson and Grandpa Ron's Kuntz-powered, bumper-draggin' Fox coupe went three for five in final rounds, they're looking to wear the crown in 2010. Steve Gifford moved up from Factory Stock to a new Modular Depot-backed, Two-Valve SN-95 Cobra; he appeared in final rounds and exited with some sick mph. Last season's champ Brandon Alsept's SN-95 tested several engine combos and still ended up with a win. It won't be long before Eric Burkhart's gorgeous '95 Boss 302 and Shawn Johnson's Four-Valve SN-95 find their way to the winner's circle!
Bored bracketeers and test-n-tune junkies tired of handicap starts and hours in the staging lanes? This entry-level class is the for fuel-injected cars. It is one of the most contested in the NMRA, serving as a stepping stone to quicker classes.

E.T.: Tommy Godfrey, 11.03 seconds
MPH: Tommy Godfrey, 121.05 mph
Repeat champ Tommy Godfrey stayed a half lap ahead of the field all season. His coupe leaves with the wheels high. Watch and be amazed by his stocker. John Leslie Jr. finally got the monkey off his back, capturing his first event win in '09. Now his sights are on a championship. Jay Dold's Modular Depot-sponsored '03 Mach 1 earned a couple final-round appearances, but it was newcomer Jim St. Charles's '98 Cobra that handed the champ his only loss of the season. The next two gladiators in line for a shot at glory have to be the Two-Valve modular entries of Matt Armine and Brian Marr.
This class offers Pro-tree, handicap style racing which you must qualify for your e.t. with a 0.10 breakout allowance on race day. Modular Motor is center stage for showcasing the performance potential of the overhead camshaft modular engines, don't look for an easy go of it here-the fields are big and racing is intense. No electronics are allowed in Modular Muscle.
Reggie Burnette Jr. scored a pair of wins in 2008 and won three in 2009, bullying his way to the '09 title. Donnie Bowles Junior's natural-gas-powered, 9-second 'Stang and Susan Roush McClenaghan's She-Devil Motorsports-supercharged '01 Pony pounded the '08 champ Tom Motycka back to the fourth spot in the points. Jeff Stafford's Modular Misfits-sponsored green convertible, Ronnie Diaz and his bad black Pascal Engines Performance-powered '99 GT, and Zak Harty's 11-second '97 GT will be on the hunt for the Roush big guns. Richard Robinson's '97 Cobra, Lucas Clark's '98 GT, and Joseph Marini's '05 fight to move up to the top five.
Open Comp-style racing has become a stable at dragstrips around the country. You must qualify for your e.t. with a 0.10 breakout allowance on race day. Most of the competitors will be bracket racers looking for something a bit different. The fields will be full and the racing intense, with no electronics allowed.
Wesley Dalrymple won the final event in 2009 to capture the championship with his 10-second, all-motor big-block. The big-block brigade of Bruce Parker's '79, Paul Lehman's '31 Model A, and David Woodside's '84 T-Bird will charge the hill. They collected five wins between them in 2009 and are planning for even more champagne parties in 2010. The fighting Foxes of Saul Walker II's360-cube '93, Bryan Parker's 466-cube '86, Randy Conway's 410-cupe coupe, and Robert Motycka's big-block '88 hatch will stampede their way to the winner's circle. And don't overlook Jimmy Cantrell and his innocent six-cylinder Ranger Splash. He may just rain on everyone's parade!
Truck & Lightning
This will be a battle for pickup supremacy where all Ford trucks are allowed to compete. It's Pro-tree, handicap-style racing, and you must qualify for your e.t. with a 0.10 breakout allowance on race day. Don't look for an easy go of it here-the fields are big and the no-electronics racing is intense.
Bob Cochran bought his '48 F1 over 40 years ago to tow his '41 F100 show truck around. Now it's all about quarter-mile pounding. Class champ Mike Motycka got bumped out of the spotlight, even though he went two for two in four trips to the last dance. Gen 2 pioneer Johnny Lightning's 10-second '02 daily Lightning, Gerry Van Veen's Ranger, Don Justus' '01 Lightning, and Gary Windsor's '93 Lightning have a plot to oust the top three from contention. If Rob Chuhran, Joe Matthews, Steve Martin, Bob Kowalske, and Robert Abramavich have a say in it, Lightning will strike the competition down-Gen 2-style!
The Super Stang class showcases the performance capabilities of all S197 Mustangs. Steeds must weigh 3,400 pounds, run quicker than a 14.50, and launch on a footbrake only-no transbrakes, two-steps, or electronics allowed.
Chris Parisi had a perfect record in the finals, putting his six-cylinder '07 Steeda in the winner's circle on four occasions. Don Justus is a terror in both the Truck and Lightning and Super 'Stang classes. Meanwhile, Joe Cram's Edelbrock-sponsored '06 and Kent Nine's '06 drop-top will be knocking out the competition with an eye in the rear-view mirror for the ever quicker bunch of Pete Espeut's BMR-sponsored '05 GT, Paul Gamino's borrowed ride, and Michael Dellisanti's mid-10-second '07 GT/CS.
