The 2011 Specialty Equipment Market Association show took place just before Ford introduced the spiffy, new '13 Mustang refresh, so we didn't expect to see an overwhelming product assault on the current Mustangs. However, having attended the show for the last 17 years, we know that even when the Mustang isn't at its peak or the economy isn't humming along like a tuned Coyote, there are always new Mustang parts to be seen in Las Vegas in early November. Such was the case again in 2011.
While the Mustang's arch-nemesis was attracting all the attention with a bunch of show cars, the Mustang was doing work on the show floor where it counts. Company after company offered up new gear for Mustangs of all makes and models. With the Coyote 5.0s still fresh, there were plenty of new parts still flowing for those cars.
In all, the future looks bright for our favorite car, and the freshened '13 Mustangs are sure to star at next year's show. Till then, check out our photos to see all the new gear heading for your garage in 2012.
Horse Sense: Mustang was not crowned SEMA's Hottest Car, but it wasn't for a lack of cars or parts at the show.
Since Aeromotive showed of this system for a Brand X car, we've been anticipating an application to fit the S197-and-newer Mustangs. That day has arrived, as Aeromotive (www.aeromotiveinc.com
) showed off its '05-'10 Mustang Stealth Fuel System in Vegas. This drop-in system is an all-in-one answer for mega-powered Mustangs. What was even more exciting is that the company is also going to adapt this system to a Terminator-style tank for pre-'05 Mustang applications.
Showing off its new Scotchprint Wrap Film Series 1080, 3M (www.3mgraphics.com
) tugged at our heartstrings by displaying the flexibility of these wraps on a Shelby GT500 Super Snake. Each day of the SEMA show, they wrapped the Super Snake with a different design using the 1080 films, which are available in high gloss, carbon fiber, matte, and brushed metal finishes. These easy to install films offer infinite possibilities for customizing your Mustang.
We know all about Afco for its sweet heat exchangers, and Dynatech for its top-notch exhaust systems, but Afco (www.afcoracing.com
) also produces quality suspension gear. Its latest product is the 2011 Mustang Front Suspension Package, which features coil-over struts and caster/camber plates designed specifically for the latest 'Stang.
American Racing Headers
We know all about American Racing Headers' (www.americanracingheaders.com
) pipes for the likes of Coyote 5.0s and GT500 5.4s, but the company has obviously seen the potential that we see in the 3.7-liter V6. ARH displayed this exhaust system for the six, which features 13⁄4-inch long-tube headers and a 21⁄2-inch catalytic X-shape crossover.
Of course we know that BorgWarner Turbo Systems (www.turbodriven.com
) makes turbos, but the crew also knows how to get our attention. They just had to park Greg Seth Hunter's twin-turbocharged MMR GT500 in their booth. The car features a 5.4 fed by twin 91mm Airwerks turbos. Race cars obviously attract attention, but BW offers turbos sized for street Mustangs as well.
After seeing it at the past few SEMA shows in proto-type form, the InTune from DiabloSport (www.diablosport.com
) should be shipping by the time you read this. This compact, smartphone-style tuner can tune a laundry list of vehicles under one part number. At press time, the InTune did not support tuning Fords, but that functionality should be coming soon.
Ansen Valve Covers
Mustang owners love to customize their rides, and the engine compartment is one area that is worthy of spiffing up. If you are lucky enough to own an '11-'12 Mustang GT or Boss 302, Ansen Valve Covers (www.ansenusa.com
) has some sweet, new die-cast coil covers in Chrome, Black, or Blue. They are also available adorned with the Ford Racing logo.
Canton Racing Products
If you are building up your Coyote engine and need more oil pan, Canton (www.cantonracingproducts.com
) has an upgrade in its lineup. The company also has a new aluminum intercooler fluid tank for Kenne Bell (www.kennebell.net) supercharger applications.
Doug Thorley Headers
If you like the Tri-Y design of the factory manifolds, but would like something a little longer, then Doug Thorley (www.dougthorleyheaders.com) is singing your tune. The company's Worx Series Headers offer the Tri-Y design and are available for '11-'12 Mustang GTs. Doug Thorley also has muffler deletes for these cars.
We never cease to be amazed by the creativity at Auto Meter (www.autometer.com). You'd think the company would have the gauge market covered by now, but they had plenty of new gear at SEMA. For the racing crowd, the new Ultimate DL Playback Tach offers the ability to download data to your computer. They also added wideband oxygen sensor gauges to their Carbon Fiber line, introduced a GPS-powered speedometer, and opened a custom shop for car builders that need a unique touch.
While popping in to talk about a custom car cover for Fox 500, we couldn't help but notice a Mustang modeling gear from Covercraft (www.covercraft.com). Not only does the company offer a full line of car covers available with Ford licensed logos, but it has Colgan bras, like the carbon-look protector on this car. Likewise the company offers the UVS100 Ultraviolet Shield for your 'Stang's windshield.
Besides its expansive offering of Ford pistons and engine kits, D.S.S. Racing (www.dssracing.com) displayed its own new cylinder head for small-block Fords. Taking its years of experience working with other heads, D.S.S. has put that knowledge into these new heads. Stay tuned to these pages for some test data on these deep breathers.
The bolt-on kings at BBK Performance (www.bbkperformance.com) had a bountiful presence at SEMA. Not only did they expand their line of throttle bodies to include the 3.7-liter V-6, but they introduced a new line of Blackout CAIs. Most compelling of the bunch, however, was the company's clever new Vari-Tune muffler, which allow you to adjust the sound and flow of your Mustang's exhaust with the spin of a wrench.
Drowning out sound is Design Engineering's (www.designengineering.com) business, and business is good. DEI offered several new variants of its Boom Mat product at the show, including Moldable Noise Barrier, Thick, Leather Look, and Under Carpet Lite.
DynoMax Performance Exhaust
If you are a regular 5.0&SF reader (and really, why wouldn't you be?), you've already seen a custom installation of DynoMax's (www.dynomax.com) VT Muffler. That muffler technology is now available in a bolt-on, axle-back kit for '11-'12 3.7-liter Mustangs.
After a big push into the supercharger game, it was reassuring to see there are still new pushrod small-block cylinder heads pouring out of Edelbrock's (www.edelbrock.com) foundries. The latest in that lineage for the small-block Ford is the E-205, which is said to support 6,500 rpm and 500 naturally aspirated horsepower. Also from the big E is a 5.8-liter version of the Performer RPM II intake manifold.
Holley Performance Parts
By now you are familiar with Holley's (www.holley.com) Dominator fuel pumps designed for high-powered applications, but the company is committed to offer a complete system approach, including the fuel lines and fittings. The latest upgrade in this line is its re-formulated Super Stock hose, which is better suited to handle the additives in modern fuels.
MSD (www.msdperformance.com) took home the coveted SEMA New Products award hardware for its Atomic EFI (www.atomicefi.com) system. If you are looking for an easy way to upgrade your pre-'86 'Stang to EFI, MSD bills this system as one you can install in a day thanks to its single fuel line and self-tuning capabilities.
With the power being created by today's aftermarket-influenced Coyote 5.0s, there's no doubt that factory clutches will be pushed past their limits. Offering a more durable solution at the show was Exedy (www.exedyusa.com) with its Ford Mustang 5.0 Twin-Plate Racing Clutch. Said to support more than 800 lb-ft of torque, this multi-plate clutch should handle what you can throw at it.
Kooks Custom Headers
If you read our story on Competition Auto's supercharger install on a Boss 302 Laguna Seca, you know Kook's Custom Performance (www.kookscustomheaders.com) was working on an exhaust system compatible with the Boss 302 side-exit exhaust—and here it is. This X-shape mid-pipe completes the link between Kooks' long-tubes and the factory side-exit pipes.
It's not too often we get excited about a battery charger, but knowing that Optima Batteries (www.optimabatteries.com) have special charging needs, it was great to see the stylish Digital 1200 charger. It won't be available till the spring of this year, but it will look right at home next to your Optima. Better yet, it won't just charge your car's battery, but it will revive your digital devices via its USB port.
Ford Racing Performance Parts
From bigger Coyote throttle bodies to turn-key race cars, there is something for everyone in the latest group of parts from FRPP (www.fordracingparts.com). What came across as one of the highlights of the show for us was this prototype Cobra Jet display engine. It's a built Coyote wearing Boss heads and a 2.9-liter Whipple supercharger that should just be a monster. What's even cooler is the 10-rib belt drive that will allow stepping up the boost on all FRPP-blown Coyotes. Though built for a race car, this belt drive—which includes an ATI overdrive damper—is still compatible with all the factory accessories.
Upgrading the hydraulic clutch line in an '05-and-up Mustang can really improve clutch feel, and McLeod (www.mcleodracing.com) offered a way to do just that with its Hi-flow A.N.-4 Stainless Steel Braided Hydraulic Line. If you own an earlier Mustang, the company also offers a '79-'04 Ford Mustang Hydraulic Conversion Kit.
If rear coilovers are your desire, QA1 (www.qa1.net) presented this Mustang Bolt-In Rear Coilover Kit, which allows installing single- or double-adjustable shocks and a myriad of spring rates on your '79-'04 Mustang.
We know about Fidanza (www.fidanza.com) from its flywheels and clutches, but the company obviously agrees that the factory MT-82 shifter can use a little help. This stainless steel stick obviously shortens the shift throw, but it also retains the factory reverse lockout functionality.
MGP Caliper Covers
Hiding ugly stock calipers is the job handled by MGP Caliper Covers (www.calipercovers.com), and now they offer a carbon-fiber-look, hydrocarbon-covered variant for those that have Editor Turner's fetish.
Quick Time Performance
One of my favorite products from the show was this electric exhaust cutout from Quick Time Performance (www.quicktimeperformance.com). It is designed as a direct bolt-on for the '11-'12 Boss 302 side-exit exhaust, and it allows you to open the side exhaust with the push of a remote button. It should be a big hit with the Boss crowd.
Your author has been into Apple products since my dad brought home a Lisa computer in the '80s, so it's no big surprise that my backpack is full of iOS devices. Thanks to SCT's (www.sctflash.com) innovative, new iTSX hardware and companion app, you can now tune your Mustang from your iPad, iPhone, or iPod Touch. How cool is that? It was definitely cool enough to take home an award from SEMA. We can't wait to try it out.
Modern fuels can be rough on your fuel system, but TechAFX (www.techafx.com) says its PTFE-lined hose is up to surviving what those fuels throw at it. Additionally, the critical part about this hose is that it is non-conductive, as PFTE is good for durability, but can conduct electricity. TechAFX says its fuel hose is both durable and safe.
Turn Key Engine Supply
If you a need a one-stop solution for A/C and power steering brackets for your Coyote swap, Turn Key Engine Supply (www.turnkeyenginesupply.com) is your stop. They have complete engine-swap solutions for Coyotes, including bracket systems for the street accessories. The company is also working on a bracket system compatible with the popular supercharger drive systems.
Apparently the '12-and-up Boss 302 has some special clutch needs, and SPEC (www.specclutch.com) is on the case to provide a Boss-specific clutch for Ford's high-winder. The company also has clutches for the base 3.7 V-6 and the Coyote 5.0.
The crew at TMI Products (www.tmiproducts.com) have the Fox and S197 Mustang covered with a variety of products, but it's great to see the company moving into the middle with these '99-'04 GT seats. The SN-95 and New Edge 'Stangs certainly deserve the love from TMI.
Mustang suspension gear is nothing new for Whiteline (www.whiteline.com.au), but what is new is the company's new Watt's link for the '05-and-up Mustangs. This setup is designed to improve lateral axle control even more than the company's Panhard upgrades.
Stainless Steel Brakes Corporation
Often adding drag wheels means that stopping power has to take a back seat. Not so with SSBC's (www.ssbrakes.com) Competition Series calipers. They are designed specifically with late-model Mustangs in mind and offer an easy installation with a wide variety of wheel fitments.
It was a busy year for the Trick Flow gang (www.trickflow.com). In 2010, they hit us with some cool Cleveland gear; in 2011, there's more for the Windsor and the Two-Valve. For the 302/351 crowd, the company offers its affordable, new Twisted Wedge 170, which is an all-new TW casting that gets the CNC treatment for out-of-the-box flow. For more serious endeavours there's a new 185cc-runner Track Heat head as well. On the Two-Valve side, the new Street Burner Two-Valve intake improves bottom-end performance without giving up performance up top.
Now the official brake supplier for Shelby, Wilwood (www.wilwood.com) obviously has the '05 to present Mustang covered with big brake kits. The company also has a new big brake kit for '87-'93 Mustangs.
Showing off a new line of 9-inch rearend hardware designed to support big power in a streetable package was Strange Engineering (www.strangeengineering.net). The company's new HD Aluminum Case for 9-inch rears is designed for the street/strip and Pro Touring crowds. Likewise, Strange's new limited-slip differentials will support big power in a streetable way.
Previously on these pages we have installed Zex (www.zex.com) nitrous kits on Coyote 'Stangs, and these cars love the juice. For those that are on the cutting edge, Zex now has a Blackout kit for the '12 Mustang GT, which will give your new pony a boost of 75 to 175 hp.
