Horse Sense: We ran into Jason Miller from Maryland International Raceway (www.mirdrag.com) at PRI. Jason is super-excited for the NMCA race coming to his track June 3-5, 2011, and we’re rooting for a good showing at the event so we can possibly attend an NMRA event at MIR.
Here at 5.0&SF, we plan out the year according to events, mixing them up between staff members to make sure one person doesn’t do the brunt of the traveling. We start out with the ORTC race in Valdosta and the NMRA Bradenton opener in March, and close out the year with the Performance Racing Industry show in December. The year goes by so fast, we’re barely able to see it flash before our eyes. Toward the end of each year, we wonder where the time has gone, as we begin to anticipate next year’s activities and events.
Even though the PRI show is at the end of the year, it gets us excited for the next year. When PRI comes around, we realize it’s another year gone, but we’re also excited to see what’s down the pipeline in the Mustang community. The PRI show gets us pumped up for the upcoming season, showing us what new products will be tearing up the streets and dragstrips in 2011 and beyond.
Specifically, we go up and down every row of the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Florida, combing through every manufacturer display hunting for Mustang parts. These are the speed parts hoping to find their way onto or into your Mustang in 2011. Check ’em out.
How sweet is this? Aeromotive (913) 647-7300; www.aeromotiveinc.com introduced its brand-new in-tank/OEM-style, high-volume fuel pump at the 2010 PRI show. The submergible pump feeds fuel at a rate of 340 lph, making it the perfect unseen, unheard fuel provider for hard-hitting, EFI street ’Stangs.
When you think of Baer brakes (866) 294-0688; www.baer.com, you tend to think of street or road-racing applications, but at PRI, the company debuted a line of drag-racing brake packages. Baer’s Street-Strip-4-Plus Drag Spec brake systems are available for the front and rear. These kits include rotors, calipers, pads, and hubs, if selected. The kits are built around Baer’s lightweight caliper design, with value in mind.
BLP Racing Products
A company that didn’t get its start playing with Mustangs, BLP Racing Products (800) 624-1358; www.blp.com has these Ford small-block sheetmetal valve covers. BLP has them available for conventional small-block and Yates-style heads. Both designs feature a 0.500-inch-thick rail with gasket retention for maximum rigidity and gasket sealing capability.
The crew at BMR Fabrication (813) 986-9302; www.bmrfabrication.com worked right up until the 11th hour to finish this slick tubular K-member for 5.0-powered ’11 Mustang GTs. The 24-pound cradle sheds 20 pounds off the nose of a new Pony, and can be ordered in several flavorswith/without Coyote engine mounts, with/without Pinto rack mounts, with -inch-lowered 5.0 engine mounts and Pinto rack mounts, with pushrod Windsor engine mounts and Pinto rack mounts.
Chris Alston’s Chassisworks
Taking us back to the days of Craig Radovich’s twin-blower car, Chris Alston’s Chassisworks (888) 388-0297; www.cachassisworks.com brought serious heat to the PRI show in the form of this badass twin-supercharger gear-drive bracket for Vortech or ProCharger-blown, small-block Ford engines. The CNC-machined brace features a built-in timing pointer and crank-trigger-pickup point, and can be ordered with gear ratios of your specification. Single-blower brackets also are available for those who don’t care to make as much steam.
In less than a year, we’ve seen blowers, nitrous systems, and several other bolt-on parts that are designed to make more horsepower with Coyote 5.0s. Big-time cylinder and exhaust temperature is a direct byproduct of big steam. Cometic (800) 752-9850; www.cometic.com has developed multi-layered steel (two embossed, viton-coated, stainless-steel outer layers and a variable-thickness, stainless center layer) head-, and exhaust gaskets (shown) that will stand up to the high heat. The cool thing about the head gaskets is that they don’t need retorquing once they’re installed, and the exhaust gaskets are fully reusable.
With the ’11 Mustang GT Coyote engine, everyone’s trying to figure out if the engine’s maxed out from the factory. Comp Cams (800) 999-0853; www.compcams.com thinks there’s power to be made via its new billet hydraulic roller cams. These cam profiles are available for naturally aspirated and supercharged engines, optimized to give your Coyote the power where you want it and when. Plus, custom grinds are available as well. These cams feature an integrated counter balance design to cut down on vibration and reduce overall harmonics to ensure smooth operation at high rpm.
Dart Machinery (248) 362-1188; www.dartheads.com has expanded its Special High Performance lineup of small-block Ford short-blocks to include a Windsor-based 427ci. The internally balanced, 4.125-inch-bore x 4.000-inch-stroke short-block features a cast crankshaft and forged I-beam rods as standard equipment. However, when using the small-block Ford short-block builder tool on Dart’s website to order a 427, all it takes is a few mouse clicks to outfit yours with a forged 4340 crankshaft and H-beam rods.
While DiabloSport’s (877) 396-6614; www.diablosport.com Trinity is still the same externally, the handheld flash tuner has been given an internal makeover that definitely warrants a mention. The all-purpose T-1000 now supports the Copperhead ECU of ’11 Mustang GTs (as well as engine-management programming associated with 10 other ’03-’11 Ford/Lincoln/Mercury V-8 and V-6-powered vehicles) and has all-new graphics, animations, and icons for an entirely new look.
Granatelli Motorsports (805) 486-6644; www.granatellimotorsports.com definitely had the bling workin’ at PRI, with sexy billet cam covers for 4.6-liter Two-Valve and 5.4-liter Four-Valve engines. At more than $2,000 per set, these babies definitely are targeted toward owners with expensive tastes.
One would think these would’ve been out a long time ago, but Fluidyne (888) 358-4396; www.fluidyne.com had these new aluminum radiators at PRI for us to check out, available for both manual- and automatic-transmission Mustangs. Fluidyne also had a new electric fan setup featuring dual fans, as well. And, of course, the company had its new Shelby GT500 radiator and various heat exchangers at the show.
If there was one booth we wanted to stay in, it was definitely the Ford Racing (800) FORD-SVT; www.fordracingparts.com area. Ford Racing had several Coyote engines at PRI, and we drooled on every single one of them. Also in attendance was the new Boss 302S. No doubt you’ve seen the Boss 302S in action online, and we want four of them. Tiger Racing made the Boss 302S hood and wing, and they’ll get plenty of use and testing on Paul Brown’s racecar. Also on display were several Coyote swap parts, like an oil filter relocation kit, alternator kit, and control pack. We thought of taking a few parts with us, but we didn’t think we could make it out of the building.
My Forgestar (714) 826-8249; www.forgestar.com brochure was ruined when Terry Beefcake Reeves spilled my Pepsi into my PRI roll-around, but I was still able to gather enough info to let you know that these carbon-fiber wheels will work on your ’05-’11 Mustang. The wheels seen here are custom-built to order, but Forgestar also has other designs for S197 Mustangs, including a stylish race-inspired split-spoke wheel example.
G-Force Racing Transmissions
G-Force (717) 202-8367; www.gforce transmissions.com is always at the cutting edge of transmission technology, and at PRI the company had its new T3650 transmission kit. To enable its T3650 transmission to handle up to 1,000 hp, G-Force made a gear kit featuring revised gear ratios to help the transmission live. Furthermore, the transmission boasts a 0.59 overdrive Fifth gear. The transmission uses a front plate for a wide variety of applications, including early Fords, as well. This transmission is ideal for T3650-equipped ’01-’04 Mustangs, but G-Force also has a kit to install the transmission into a ’05-’10 Mustang as well. Plus, this transmission will fit in place of the ’96-’01 T45, but you’ll have to come up with a speedo provision since the T3650 is an electronic-speedo unit, and the T45 is a mechanical-speedo unit.
With all the focus on the ’11 Mustang GT, the ’10 Mustangs need help keeping up. Hughes Performance (602) 257-9591; www.hughesperformance.com is here to help owners of ’10 Mustang GTs with its new converter. It’s a bolt-in, 10-inch billet unit with a custom cut stator; a billet, one-piece lock-up piston; a hardened hub and splines; and a three-piece Torrington roller bearing.
It seems all we hear nowadays is how much people want a new iPhone. Whereas many people just want a cell phone to reliably make and receive phone calls, others are a little more demanding of their cellular devices. Innovate Motorsports (800) 348-3037; www.innovatemotorsports.com new OT-2 iPhone app enables you to monitor your OBD-II Mustang’s functions, and it serves as an efficiency meter, datalogger, and scan tool. The OT-2 connects your iPhone to your Mustang’s OBD-II port to do all these things, making your iPhone an important tool, as well.
Each year at PRI, Innovator’s West (785) 825-6166; www.innovatorswest.com seems to always unveil new overdrive dampers for the latest Mustang engines. This ’11 5.0 balancer actually is a standard-diameter prototype piece. However, we’re told that larger overdrive units for supercharged Coyote ’Stangs will also be available by the time you read this.
Justin’s Performance Center
We enjoyed seeing Justin Burcham and the gang from Justin’s Performance Center (866) JPC-RACE; www.jpcracing.com all set up in a booth at this year’s show. While several new JPC-original pieces were on display (4.6-liter Three-Valve cast-aluminum intake manifold, ’05-’11 Mustang adjustable upper control arm, and ’10-’11 line-lock), the company’s sweet lineup of CNC-ported ’11 5.0 4V cylinder heads; custom-grind camshafts; and stainless-steel, long-tube headers and exhaust, were definitely to the front!
Located in the heart of NASCAR country in Moorseville, North Carolina, Kenny’s Components (704) 662-0777; www.kennyscomponents.com has these carbon-fiber valve covers for small-block Ford engines. Kenny’s specialty is carbon fiber, and the company can make a variety of components in carbon to withstand the rigors of everyday abuse. Editor Turner would love Kenny’s to make Shelby GT500 cam covers in carbon fiber!
Feast your eyes on this 20-inch drag radial from Mickey Thompson (330) 928-9092; www.mickeythompsontires.com. That’s right, this one’s a dub, and M/T also offers the sticky street radialsformally referred to as ET Street Radial IIin 18- and 19-inch diameters for S197s, ’11s, and other Mustangs with big rear wheels.
A couple years ago at the PRI show, we saw Moser’s (260)726-6689; www.moserengineering.com Wavetrac differential for the 9-inch rear. This time around, the company had the 8.8 Wavetrac 31-spline differential at the show. The Wavetrac differential is designed to improve grip in low-traction conditions; it shines on the road course, dragstrip, and street. The Wavetrac is designed to keep power going through both rear drive wheels at all time.
To help get your ’11 Mustang GT off the line, check out MSD Ignition’s (915) 855-7123; www.msdignition.com new 2-Step Launch Control. Instead of randomly revving your Coyote to who-knows-where, the 2-Step allows you to select the rpm you want to launch atit’s that easy. Doing so will allow you to focus more on your reaction time, but also provide consistent launch rpm, which will make for more consistent launches as well. Furthermore, you’ll also be able to figure out your car’s most optimum launch rpm for consistent 60-foot times.
All of us know the enemy of speed is too much weight, especially at the dragstrip. To keep your drag ’Stang from being on The Biggest Loser, check out Powercell’s (410) 988-4500; www.powercelltech.com new compact battery. JPC Racing had this example at its booth at PRI. Designed for 16-volt conversions. Powercells are lithium batteries designed to power up your racecar without taking up too much weight, which allows you to decide where the weight will go on your Mustang.
ProCharger (913) 338-2886; www.procharger.com brings cog-drive technology into the mix for its ’11 5.0 supercharger systems. A super-fat 50mm, dedicated cog-drive belt is the star of this race-specific setup, which also includes a billet aluminum bracket that accepts the entire F-1 Series of ProCharger blowers, a billet tensioner pulley, a cog for the crank, and an air-to-air intecooler that together can produce as much as 1,300 hp.
It took a little while, but the S197 Mustang is really starting to show up at the dragstrip. Helping the cause, Strange Engineering (847) 663-1701; www.strangeengineering.net has these new single-adjustable struts and shocks for S197s. These dampers are easily adjusted thanks to external rebound adjustment knobs, and they’re designed to be an easy bolt-in swap.
Total Engine Airflow
That didn’t take too long. Total Engine Airflow (330) 634-2155; www.totalengineairflow.com already has a CNC program for the new Coyote 5.0 engine. TEA studied the heads, and where they could be improved; then the company designed a CNC program to get the most flow possible.
At the close of PRI, we always ask each other, What do you think was the hottest part at the show this year? Well, while there definitely was a ton of hotness in nearly every aisle, Wiseco’s (800) 321-1364; www.wiseco.com new ’11 Coyote-5.0 stroker short-block is the piece that won over your tech editor hands down. The block features 95mm ERL sleeves and a billet Wiseco/K1 Technologies stroker kit (crankshaft and H-beam rods), which increases displacement to 5.8 liters! Move over, Cleveland, Midland, and Windsorthis ’11 Coyote just might prove itself to be the baddest 351 of them all. 5.0
