EcoBoost sales are soaring due to its great combination of fuel efficiency and performance. Ford Motor Company just reached quite the milestone – two million EcoBoost engines built! More than 100,000 EcoBoost engines are produced every month with a target of 1.3 million for just this year alone, an increase of more than 60-percent from 2012.
A Ford Escape featuring a 2.0L EcoBoost engine was the two-millionth vehicle to roll off of the assembly line in Louisville, Kentucky, just last week.
“Ford EcoBoost delivers great performance with lower fuel bills, a recipe that is proving incredibly popular with consumers around the world,” said Joe Bakaj, vice president, powertrain engineering for Ford. “EcoBoost engines are attracting new customers to the Ford brand every day, and our plants are working hard to keep up with demand.”
The EcoBoost lineup consists of a 1.0L three-cylinder; 1.5L, 1.6L and 2.0L four cylinder engines; and a powerful 3.5L V-6. EcoBoost technology is available in every region that Ford serves worldwide and will likely be offered on about 80 percent of the company’s global nameplates by the end of the year. The combination of smaller displacement and turbocharging, direct injection and variable valve timing deliver performance while maintaining great fuel economy. In fact, the Ford EcoBoost delivers up to 20-percent better fuel economy than any of the higher displacement gasoline engines.
Just a thought here, an average annual fuel bill is $3,400 for a 2009 Ford F-150 2WD with the 5.4L V-8 engine and that drops to just $3,000 for a 2013 F-150 2WD sporting a 3.5L EcoBoost engine. That means that the average consumer would save $4,000 in gas alone over the 10-year life of the vehicle and 150,000 miles.
Over in Europe, Ford is doubling the production capacity at its Cologne, Germany, engine plant to produce more than 1,000 engines in a single day. This move was made due to the demand for the 1.0L EcoBoost engine, which will be fitted to 11 models by 2014. Three-cylinder sales are also growing with 43-percent in B-Max sales, 32-percent of Focus sales, 26-percent of Fiesta sales, and 24-percent of C-MAX and Grand C-MAX sales.
Starting in 2014, the Ford Fiesta will be the first 1.0L three-cylinder available in the U.S. and is expected to be the most fuel-efficient non-hybrid car available here in the states.
